Uncertain. At least two proposals exist:

1. from Spanish asno or Latin asinus, although phonetically improbable;
2. from hartz (“bear”) +‎ -to (diminutive suffix), phonetically impeccable, but semantically strange.

If the second is correct, then may be related to Aquitanian *asto, found in *Asto-ilunno.^[1][2]
