Etymology
[edit]Appears to be a coinage in Japanese from Middle Chinese-derived elements, as a compound of 番 (ban, “watch, watchman”) + 犬 (ken, “dog”).[1][2][3][4][5] First cited in Japanese to 1920.[1]
