Inherited from Proto-Munda *daːˀk (water), from Proto-Austroasiatic *ɗaːkʔ (water). Cognates include Mundari दाः (dāḥ), Ho 𑣔𑣁𑣄 (daʔ), Khmer ទឹក (tik) and Vietnamese nước.
