First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Thanks for SVG

Hi Mozillaman. Thank you for making Image:Attic 00005.svg, Image:Attic 00010.svg and Image:Attic 00050.svg. The images will be used at sv:Attiska talbeteckningssystemet. Best regards // Mankash (talk) 15:38, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I saw the template that you left on the image's description page. I enter the data in an .ODS file using OpenOffice Calc, create a graphic and screenshoot it. Then paste the screenshot in IrfanView and save in .PNG. The last thing to do is to crop the graphic with Paint.NET or PhotoFiltre. Can you give me any example or idea how to organize this information and put it on the description page, as well as, how to upload the source file, which is in .ODS format? Thank you! --Chech Explorer (talk) 16:23, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You should be able to export an SVG file from OpenOffice Draw by going to File->Export and then choosing "SVG - Scalable Vector Graphic" from the file type menu. Vector formats are a preferred format on Wikimedia Commons because they can be scaled much larger without quality loss, and because they can be easily edited, enhanced and translated after the fact. You can upload your SVG as a new image, and then use Template:Vector version available to link the PNG to the new SVG file. For more information about SVG, visit Commons: Transition to SVG. Thanks for contributing to Wikimedia Commons! --Mozillaman (talk) 16:33, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much. I didn't know OpenOffice supports SVG. But here comes the question how do I open the ODS in OO Draw. When I open it it appears in OO Calc window again. When I copy the chart and paste it in Draw it works, but it doesn't save the text labels when I export it to SVG. You can see for yourself: Image:Exoplanets.svg. Any further advices? I would like to make it SVG. I have always wanted to learn SVG. You can see it on my user page. --Chech Explorer (talk) 17:42, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You did great! I opened the SVG file up in Inkscape and resaved it. Some of the unicode characters apparently threw off rendering since all the text was actually there, just not being displayed. You can get a plugin for Draw too if you want to open or modify SVGs [1] . Also, I didn't check Image:Exoplanets.svg for validity after I uploaded the new version, so you'll need to check that out. --Mozillaman (talk) 22:03, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'm sorry but i dont understand whats wrong with my images i've upload. It's my own stuff and i dont mind if other people will use it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stoodcrazy (talk • contribs) 11:05, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again

Hi, I vectorized this map, but I need some help. How do I crop the map only and fix the labels, so that they move proportionally when I resize the image? Thanks --Chech Explorer (talk) 14:24, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is, that's not actually vector. The original map bitmap is just embedded into an SVG. You'll need to make or find a fully vector map of that region, and then put your labels over it. --MozillaMan(talk) 15:52, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I added a BadSVG template to your SVG, someone may be able to help you find a map through that as well. (I'm not familiar enough with the region) --MozillaMan(talk) 15:58, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Need help...

Hey man... I'm new in this all and I kinda don't get anything... I usually download photos from google... How is that a copyright violation and how can I avoid that violation? Help please! --Darkworker667 (talk) 14:06, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

 • I can understand your frustration! First, let me begin by saying that all the licenses that we use here at Wikipedia Commons can only be used by the original owner, unless it is a derivative work of something that was previously licensed under an open license. So, unless you (1) made the media OR (2) made a media composed only of openly licensed media, you can't license the media yourself. So, you can't use images from Google's image search and upload them to wikipedia. Take a peek at Commons:Copyright for more information. Thanks for contributing to the Commons! --MozillaMan(talk) 20:46, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
 • Thank you wery much. Now I understand. I'll try not to make a vilation again. --Darkworker667 (talk) 08:22, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pooch Cafe Images

Hello Mozillaman,

I only just saw all your comments. I have been in discussions with Jamie on this same subject but haven't had a response from him for some time. To reiterate, all of the images used in our entry are owned and authorized for use by Paul Gilligan, the creator of Pooch Cafe. We'd be happy to have Paul send you an email confirming same. I look forward to hearing from you and to have our content uploaded online. Thanks and regards, Syerah (Synrgy) --Synrgy (talk) 11:31, 10 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Syerah! You'll need to forward Paul's permission to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. For more information on OTRS, visit OTRS. Thanks again for contributing to the Commons! --Mozillaman (talk) 13:01, 10 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Mozillaman, you've nominated this image for deletion because the source is unclear.. actually, it's like the template says: own work by uploader. I've simply created window with a a progress bar using glade, took a screenshot and cropped it to only include the progress bar. Is that a sufficient explanation of the source? - Simeon87 (talk) 17:59, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, but it isn't. You would have needed to draw every bit of the progress bar from scratch for it to be own-work. You'll need to find the license of the artwork that made the progress bar, and then you'd be able to use that license. --Mozillaman (talk) 21:47, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It should be ok now - I've modified it to use the Free screenshot template with the GPL license (like the screenshots of GNOME/Ubuntu software here on Commons). Simeon87 (talk) 12:42, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good to me! --Mozillaman (talk) 13:15, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oct 22, 2008

Hello Mozillaman, Paul advises me that the email has been sent to the address you suggested. Can you please confirm your receipt of same and let me know if we can go ahead with our revisions and upload? Thanks muchly. Syerah Synrgy (talk) 13:21, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Syerah! As long as you included the image URL in commons, an OTRS member will add a tag validating the image promptly (at any rate, they'll get back to you promptly). Thanks for contributing to the commons! --Mozillaman (talk) 21:47, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Mozillaman!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
