English subs on Terra-X files
[edit]Hi Tim, thank you very much for checking the German transcriptions and correcting them. My German is quite limited as you can tell I am sure. Could you if you have a moment double check the English subs don't contain any horrendous errors? No problem if not but I am sure there may be some errors. JimKillock (talk) 13:39, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Jim, I looked at your English subtitles and they looked very good to me. My English is also limited, so I can't check if you used the right terminology everywhere. I corrected a few obvious errors. Thank you for creating German and English subtitles! --Timk70 (talk) 14:11, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi Jim! They are very useful. I will look through your subtitle files when I have time again. You don't need to post them here, since I plan to translate all/most of the videos into Dutch, so I'll look at the German subtitle files as well anyway. Also, the ZDF (German broadcaster) said they will add subtitles to the videos, but I'm not sure if/when they will do so. --Timk70 (talk) 16:11, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks Tim, I have organised the 'checked' and 'unchecked' videos into a categories, acccessible from here: Category:Videos by Terra X with German subtitle file and I'm encouraging others to help as well. I have done all the subtitling I intended to do now, with 42 videos with German subs, and leaving 16 files without Germans subs. JimKillock (talk) 16:43, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

Colour of highway signs in Belarus
[edit]Hello,
I am writing you because you were one of the last persons to have edited the following map (back in 2017):
File:Highway_speed_limits_europe_with_indicator_colors.png
Could you please change the colour of Belarus from blue to green ?
Both the motorway symbol and all directional etc. signs on motorways are green in Belarus (and not blue). This is not a recent development; in fact, Belarusian motorway signs have never been blue, but always green since the introduction of special motorway signs in the USSR in 1979.
Here is a link to the current official regulations of these signs in Belarus (available in Russian, Belarusian and English): https://pdd.by/pdd/ru/a2-p5/
Unfortunately, the false blue marking for Belarus on this world map is also repeated on the following map:
File:Color_of_European_Motorway_Signs.svg
The two maps also contain some further inconsistencies, inaccuracies and anachronisms (especially concerning the speed limits that are subject to constant changes in the various countries of Europe), but these are comparatively less serious mistakes.
It would really be great if you could change the File:Highway_speed_limits_europe_with_indicator_colors.png (and perhaps also the other map) to reflect the actual situation in Belarus, giving the link https://pdd.by/pdd/ru/a2-p5/ in the description (to prove that this is not an arbitrary change, but rather one backed up by the official regulations).
Thank you very much in advance for all your efforts !
Juvand (talk) 08:31, 21 August 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Juvand, thanks for your message. If I look at some images available on Commons of Belarusian highways, I can only see blue signs (example 1, example 2, example 3, example 4). Can you please explain this to me first? Btw, I can't open the link to the Belarusian site. --Timk70 (talk) 14:26, 21 August 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for your answer.
- 1. My link is definitely working, I just checked it again. Please copy it manually into your browser: https://pdd.by/pdd/ru/a2-p5 or http://pdd.by/pdd/ru/a2-p5. If it still doesn't work, I can send you alternative links instead.
- 2. I can surely explain the blue signs in your examples:
- The answer is very simple: the Магістраль М-1 is NOT officially classified as a motorway (with green symbols and signs), but as a "Дарога для аўтамабіляў" ("Дорога для автомобилей" in Russian, corresponding roughly to the English term "expressway"), therefore having blue signs.
- Have a look at the following detailed description of the road on the Russian Wikipedia: https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9C1_(%D0%B0%D0%B2%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%B4%D0%BE%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%B3%D0%B0,_%D0%91%D0%B5%D0%BB%D0%BE%D1%80%D1%83%D1%81%D1%81%D0%B8%D1%8F).
- As you will clearly see, the road is an "expressway" (but NOT a motorway) between km 65 and km 573,5. Not a single section of it is classified as a motorway.
- The reason for this classification is immediately obvious on the picture in your example 1: the road is not grade-separated (at least along the section shown in example 1) and is not even a dual-carriageway. These characteristics preclude the road from being classified as a "motorway" according to to today's internationally accepted standards.
- The same is true for examples 2, 3 and 4: neither the M-4 nor the M-5 are officially classified as motorways (yet ?), but as expressways with correspondingly blue signs, even though the M-5 is, in fact, a continuous dual-carriageway, and certain sections of the M-4 are too.
- Apart from that, the signs in examples 2 and 4 are meaningless in our context: the sign in example 2 is of course blue because it indicates directions to local destinations the road to which (after exiting the highway) does not itself constitute a highway. The sign in example 4 is just an informational sign about the name and number of the road and mentions the competent district road authority.
- It might very well be the case that only a few minor sections of M-roads in Belarus (or perhaps even none at all so far) are already classified officially as motorways, though some of them would fulfil today's preconditions for being declared motorways.
- Until 1991 (and beyond that) roads like the M-1 were indeed classified as motorways (аўтамагістралі / автомагистрали) with the corresponding symbol and signs in green. But sometime in the late 1990s or 2000s, they were reclassified as expressways with blue signs, at least for the time being.
- Auch in der deutschsprachigen Wikipedia werden alle diese Straßen durchgängig zurecht als Fernstraßen und eben nicht als Autobahnen bezeichnet.
- The crucial point in all of this is that there does exist a special category of roads reserved for motorways with the corresponding symbol (sign 5.1) and signs in green instead of blue in the official regulations, regardless of the fact that in reality most (or even all) main roads in Belarus are currently classified as "expressways" instead (sign 5.3) and consequently have blue and not green signs.
- I hope this helps. Please contact me for any further questions.
- PS – Here is the English translation of sections 30 and 31 of the official Belarusian road traffic regulations (taken from the English version contained in my link). These two sections make it abundantly clear that my explanations are correct and the colour on the map(s) needs to be changed from blue to green.
- 30. Green or blue background of signs 5.20.1–5.21.2 installed outside a built-up area (inserts in signs 5.20.1, 5.20.2, certain fields of sign 5.21.2) informs that the traffic towards this built-up area or another object will be carried out respectively on a motorway or another road. Green or blue background of signs 5.20.1–5.21.2 installed in a built-up area informs that after the exit from this built-up area the traffic towards the built-up area or another object, indicated on this sign, will be carried out respectively on a motorway or another road, white background — that the mentioned object is situated in this built-up area.
- 31. The background of signs 5.24–5.26.1, 5.27, 5.28 installed on a motorway is green.
- Juvand (talk) 16:25, 21 August 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you for your detailed explanation! I will change the colour from blue to green. The maximum speed of 110 seems correct according to https://pdd.by/pdd/en/89.1. --Timk70 (talk) 16:42, 21 August 2021 (UTC)
- Juvand (talk) 16:25, 21 August 2021 (UTC)
- Danke, Tim ! 👍 Die Geschwindigkeitsbeschränkung ist 110 km/h, korrekt. --Juvand (talk) 16:51, 21 August 2021 (UTC)
