Thank you for your voice.

I respect every Wiki rules ( As I can ). I cannot respect every moves of every wikiadmins, who f.ex. does not respect the rights of uploader ( remarks for speeedy deletion of images without informing the uploader- it is not exact in this case, but it was made permanently by User:Polarlys. Try to view his deleting requests and mark, when the uploader was noticed for supply of info.

Post scriptum

I think also that the whole discussion about PD-Finland-50, PD-Dennmark, and PD-Sweden is useless for obvious reason, that we all have to respect the regulations of Finnish, Swedish or Dannish law, and the only valid interpretation is F, S. or D. court interpretation of common law, not private German opinions is (or even verdicts of German Courts - there are suitable only on the territory of FRG, not abroad.

Is anyone (brave Viking) in whole Scandinavia to conclude and close these discusssions or there will be disputed without conclusion to the end of the world ;)

Freedom First - every limitation has to be justify in detail.

Flickr-työkalusta

[edit]

Moi, suosittelit keskustelusivullani Flickr-kuvien lisäämiseen työkalua osoitteessa http://tools.wikimedia.de/~bryan/flickr/upload. Tuo palvelu näyttää kuitenkin vaativan yli 50 Commons-muokkausta toimiakseen, joten joutunen vielä jonkin aikaa lisäämään mahdolliset Flickr-kuvat ilman sitä. Kiitoksia kuitenkin vinkistä! --Kjne 07:24, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kekkonen

[edit]

First, congratulations on successfully defending Template:PD-Finland50 from deletion. Secondly, which strings do I have to pull to find more photos of Urho Kekkonen under acceptable licenses? The article about sv:Urho Kekkonen is a featured article at Swedish Wikipedia and will appear on the front page on his birthday in early September. It would be nice if the selection of photos were bigger. Regards, Thuresson 01:14, 5 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kelpaako Commonsiin?

[edit]

--Merikapteeni 17:09, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ei se ikävä kyllä kelpaa. Suomesta saa lisätä patsaiden kuvia, jos patsaan suunnittelija on kuollut yli 70 vuotta sitten. Samulili 18:20, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Serbia1918.png

[edit]

If I do not make mistake you have made final decision (Keep) about this map. My question if you are willing to change name of map to Territory under Serbian control in 1918 because this map is in reality showing that. This link [1] is showing truth of my statement because it is clearly stated on page number 11 that Hungarian civil and police administration is staying on territory under Serbian control. There is 1 similar link and invitation to Montenegro to send delegation for peace agreements in january of 1919. I ask that you to move map on new name because if I do that there is possibility of revert war (between Hungarian and Croatian user on 1 side and Serbian users on another) and I really hate that. If there is no problem can you please answer on my talk page. ---Rjecina 01:50, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your message to User:Postmann Michael

[edit]

Hi Samulili, due to your message on the notice board for admins I became aware of your message to User:Postmann Michael. As Postmann Michael does not speak English or does prefer not to read anything in English (I do not know which), I've translated your message for him into German. I second everything you said but want to add a notice. Wikipedians coming from the German wikipedia tend to be used to have full authority over their talk page including the privilege to delete messages they do not like. His comment indicated that he removed your message because it was not written in German. Regards and good luck in resolving this conflict, --AFBorchert 08:51, 2 October 2007 (UTC) P.S.: I expect you to respond here.[reply]

Thank you. It seems to me that Postmann Michael does understand some English it was kind of you to translate my message. I also want to thank you for sheding light on an important cultural difference with regard to user talk pages. That information is very useful. Samulili 10:33, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Postmann Michael has written a response in German. I do not want to translate the whole thing (most of it are complaints against Rex) but to give just a short summary: He has acknowledged your notice (i.e. he read it but he does not necessarily accept it), he does not think that it applies to him as he, in his opinion, didn't anything wrong, he intends to continue uploading of maps, he does not care how others view these maps, he intends to clear his talk page in five days, and he declared end of discussion. Because of the latter, I will not respond to this. However, feel free to tell me if you have anything to translate for him. But I do not have got the impression that he is ready to find a path which allows us to address these conflicts calmly or within the rules of our community. --AFBorchert 11:39, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder if the revert war at Image:Historisches deutsches Sprachgebiet.PNG (and elsewehre) was deleted from the logs? Can't find the image version marked with big red letters anymore. User:Rex Germanus/en:User:Rex Germanus is once again under scrutiny over at en-Wiki, see Community sanction noticeboard [2] --Matthead 18:52, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I deleted the images with big red letters spelling nazi etc. accusations. I figure that will make such vandalism seem less appealing to those who engage in it. That, and protecting the images. Samulili 05:34, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

You have tagged to images that I have uploaded with missing permission (Image:John Wark.jpg and Image:Turbokadett.jpg). I have received permission from two different persons using email. The problem is that they are in norwegian so I guess you won't be able to understand what it says. What shall I do? Kind regards TEMH 20:01, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jeg forstår norsk :) You will have to send the e-mails to commons-permissions@wikimedia.org . Once you have done that, just let me know and I'll fix the image information. Samulili 05:21, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Rorschach

[edit]

Hello, I am not trying to be a bother, but it seems obvious that Huber owns the copyright to the Rorschach. This is according to Huber 's website and the International Society of the Rorschach and Projective Methods. I really don't know how it could be much clearer. The Rorschach is still a regularly used instrument. The company that has published the instrument since its creation is not going to let the copyright run out on a profitable instrument. Again, I am not trying to be difficult. I am trying to protect the integrity of the instrument. -- Psy guy 03:43, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

I saw (lately) a message from you on my talk page about this image.
Well, you say that I should transmit a writen permission from the author of the picture. It is not really easy. People not used with WP hardly gives pictures of animals, they do not want to put pictures themself (it's a little complicated when not used to) and they do not want to write some kind of official letters.
I met the original author times ago, she said I can use the picture on WP using its pseudo as author, and that's all. If it is not enough you can delete the picture as I will not obtain more for that picture.

BTW this kind of "complication" may make people pretend that they are author of pictures only to make things simple...

Kämmäsin ja kuvittelin tämän kuvan esittävän Sigyniä, joten et viitsisi ylläpitäjän oikilla nimetä tuota Estelleksi kun kerran sitä paattia kuva esittää? Hey, I closed this "speedily" as it was requested here - I figured there was no harm done in deleting early, as it should be deleted anyway, and that it was better for the peace of mind of the user in question if we did it ASAP. If someone has a differing opinion I'd be happy to consider it, obviously. If possible/necessary, could you please reply on my talk page? Cheers, Giggy 06:01, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Right, but it should be removed anyway, I think. - Erik Baas 12:19, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think that is an artistic opinion. You are free, of course, to remove it and upload the version without that tree. If you want to replace the current file with the cropped file, I think it would be nice if you asked the uploader which one he or she prefers. Samulili 14:04, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which information may be missing. Thank you.

Samulili, I just re-uploaded this image after finding it in Yve-Alan Bois (et. al.). Piet Mondriaan. 1872-1944. Zwolle: Waanders Uitgevers, 1994 (ISBN9040097208): p. 46. According to the caption to the picture in this book the picture was taken by an unknown photographer (Fotograaf onbekend). However, it was taken in Theo van Doesburg's studio, where he moved to February 1924, which makes it likely he was the author of this picture. But either way (Van Doesburg died over 70 years ago) the picture is Public Domain. As least that's what I think. I hope you will agree with me and that we have it right this time. You had every right to protect the file but reverting to the version of the file that is not synchronized with other files that make a central part of Symbols of Croatia is somewhat strange.

Not even commenting on the revertment that is exactly the same as the other contributor User:Minestrone claims to be.

I am still going to comment on the necessity that all of the Symbols that make a central part of the presence of Croatia on Wikipedia should be the same as the majority of those symbols.

Also I think that when an admin locks a file that he/she is not taking sides. In this case you took the side of Minestrone.

If you are not taking sides why didn't you lock the file at a version that was in the time of locking.

The file that you reverted to has the CoA different from Croatian Coat of Arms.svg

I expect that you change the file back to the version that was on the file when you locked it because of all of the reasons that are mentioned above and below.

Also one of the reasons may be that the Symbols are under discussion and that Minestrone's version of the Flag of Croatia.svg have been impartialy locked by an administrator. So if we are impartial the file Civil Ensign of Croatia.svg should be locked at the version that was also last.

Also talk page on the Civil Ensign is a part of the talk page on Flag of Croatia.svg

Rainman 21:01, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your message. I understand your concern, but the only way to not take sides is to lock the image to its original version. Other versions are allowed but in this case—as in other cases—they have to be uploaded using a different name. Samulili 09:44, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Reverting to the version that Minestrone begun to advocate is not impartial as well as locking the file indefinetly ("for all times"). Why haven't you locked on a current version for a month. -- Rainman 23:03, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Another proof for not making your "permanent" move is available on my talk page, at which the orriginal uploader gave me permission to change the file. It was the author of the file Denelson83 who gave me permission to change something at its rightful place (not forcing me to find another place or name for my file). This is why you should reconsider again on the protection of that file on the version at which you found the file to be at. -- Rainman 20:26, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The permission were given before any changes to the file that you locked were made. -- Rainman 20:28, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your understanding of the issue

[edit]

If I understood it correctly and bearing in mind your statement ((Reverted to the original version; put modifications somewhere else)) is that when differences in oppinions occur then simply go to the orriginal (first upload) version and you are safe.

This is not (in my oppinion) the correct way of solving anything because some images are related and when this relation is jeopardized because when following such practices ((Reverted to the original version; put modifications somewhere else)) we might loose the coherency of these related images.

I will clarify the case on an example such as flags of Finland.

 1. Nobody says that all flags of Finland must look the same in each and every second. This is impossible to do even if a Law exist that requests such usage.
 2. Nobody says this applies to all flags of Finland but only on those in the "main" name space which is brought in as a rule on Wikipedia. For example Flag of xyz, Naval Ensign of xyz.

So we have the "main" name space of the official flags of Finland which consists of:

And with your logic we should if differences of oppinions occur change the (for example) Naval Ensign of Finland to its orriginal (first uploaded) form nevertheless of Flag of Finland in its current nor orriginal (first upload) form being different.

I think that this would lead to mis-informing the public.

This (Reverted to the original version; put modifications somewhere else) couldn't be an valid approach when dealing with related items. What chaos would arrive if everybody changed the Flags of Germany and not lookup to the "main" name space flag (Image:Flag of Germany.svg). What maheim would it be if the dependent images would not ged synchronized.

I strongly suggest to you to un-lock the file in question Image:Civil Ensign of Croatia.svg in order this file would get synchronized with the "main" name space flag.

Rainman 21:03, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New development! Minestrone removed the Template:protected from the Image:Flag of Croatia.svg this probabbly means that a compromise has been reached. But I am not completely sure of that. In this light I hope that you would unlock the Image:Civil Ensign of Croatia.svg in order to provide me or some other user to synchronize the image with the "main" one. -- Rainman 22:57, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Green politicians, part 2

[edit]

Moi!

Miten on? Nyt muutamiin mun kuviin on ilmestynyt ”Personality rights warning”. (Yhdessä niistä kuvista on laulaja esiintymässä, kahdessa muusikko keikan jälkeen ja loput on poliitikkojen poseerauksia.) Lähetin muuten aamulla OTRS:ään luvat muutamasta kaverin ottamasta kuvasta, mutten oo vielä saanut vastausta. --Elena 18:01, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Issue on the Finnish wikipedia

[edit]

Hi, I wanted to draw this thread on meta to your attention: m:Talk:Steward requests/SUL requests#Problem with Finnish Wikipedia. Apparently fiwiki bureaucrats are unwilling to allow people to usurp existing accounts for SUL purposes - even when those accounts have never made any edits. Though each wiki has been free to develop its own policy regarding single login, this seems to be the only one where the crats are refusing to allow any accounts to be taken over at all. Could you look into this? Sorry to trouble you with this but I thought as you have a pretty extensive cross-wiki presence you were a sensible person to ask, and I confess you were the only fiwiki sysop I could think of. Perhaps you could set in motion the development of a local policy or perhaps run for crat there yourself? Anything that might move thing along there would be great. WjBscribe 08:24, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I seem to have made some progress on this issue [6] anyway but would still be great if you could take a look. WjBscribe 09:11, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for helping here. I have no idea what to make of the situation, I am not vandalising or using sockpuppets, and I have no reasons to. Also, I am not bothering User:Le Behnam's work even when many times it is controversial. It is he/she who is removing images of known w:Pashtun people from Pashtuns gallery. [7] I've clearly explained to Le Behnam that Category:Ahmad Zahir was an ethnic Pashtun (by providing well respected source) at several places [8], [9], [10], including on his/her talk page but he/she refuses to acknowledge or accept it and keeps removing the guys image from Pashtuns gallery. Sorry about the overwrite. I took a closer look and the image is not a derivative of a cdn. archive photograph, as I had originally thought. I have re-uploaded the image under a different name.

I would however appreciate it if you provided additional information about the source of the image. I have a strong suspicion that (if it’s a Vimy image) the work is a derivative of an archive of Canada owned image and thus a PD-Canada tag would be required as well as Library and Archives Canada catalogue information. I noticed that you undeleted a couple of incorrect chemical structure diagrams that I deleted. There are a very large number of incorrect chemical structure images hosted on Commons and a process was created to deal with them. This involves marking them with Disputed chem which puts them in Category:Disputed chemical diagrams. Incorrect structures that reside in that category for more than a month without objection are routinely speedy deleted. Hundreds of images have been deleted by this process. Undeleting incorrect structures because they depict "something" does not make sense to me. Commons simply should not be hosting incorrect chemical structure diagrams. Unless you think these images are not wrong, can you please redelete them? Thank you. Edgar181 (talk) 12:13, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Quantität vor Qualität?

[edit]

Regarding the Google/Yahoo/Mapquest toolbar question

[edit]

I was wondering if you were satisfied by the responses to your question at Template talk:Places by decade. I didn't understand what you were suggesting might be done with a server side script. Perhaps you meant something like wikiminiatlas? This particular effort is exciting, and they no doubt have their hands full just getting basic free map functionality going. I expect as it matures the density of images in particular locations (eg. Paris/Venice/tourist destinations) will force attention on filtering features- eg those based on category set operations that can easily be performed with low cost sql operations. If so, then we'd get a Wayback machine for free, since we are already adding date categories to images. We aren't talking about any new datatype for timecodes- treating them as simple cats would give wikiminiatlas a cool historical spin. At that point, people will better appreciate the relevance of adding time cats to their images and articles (eg: Spans of time like 1930s) that infrogmation and I under a different alias have been working on for a while. That's not to say that encoding spans of time with timecodes wouldn't be useless- certainly time proximity searches and timespan intersections would be cool- eg show me all the images in the same period that Teddy Roosevelt was alive, or during the Hapsburg dynasty. Maybe some of the proximity code could be hacked to apply to timecode coordinates, but what the heck- It seems to me though that there are lower hanging fruit right now for the foundation. Unless there are few competent developers that are highly motivated about that sort of advanced scenario, it's just a lot of blue sky. My opinion is we just expose the time and space metadata and see what folks do with it. OTOH, maybe you didn't intend a question of this nature, and if so, then please ignore. -J JMesserly (talk) 20:31, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Torbiere del Sebino

[edit]

Hi,

looks like we're working on the same page!

I noticed you reverted my adding it to a cat ('Peat', because that's what the place is about), but I realized only after I added it a second time (I thought I had messed it, I'm not starting an edit war!). I also added it to 'Nature reserves in Italy'.

Meanwhile you reverted 'Peat' once again: there must be some reason, but I can't see it!

If you wish, we can talk about it on this page, I'll check it for a while.

84.97.149.75 16:45, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I meant to write to you, too, but you were quicker :) By en:peat, do you mean "an accumulation of partially decayed vegetation matter"? In that case, that category can not be in Category:Peat, because not all images in Category:Torbiere del Sebino are about peat. Samulili (talk) 16:53, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's what I mean! Peat = Torba, Peat bog = Torbiera (pl. Torbiere, I guess). It's true you no longer see peat in the pictures, but the whole place is a former peat extraction site, now filled with water.
That's what the Italian cat header means: Area naturale che ha avuto origine dall'attività di estrazione della torba = natural area originated by peat extraction. So I think it's the place itself that should go into Cat:Peat, not the individual pics. It will be easier for users to understand why it is there, and also avoid seeing the pics if it's not what they want.
I also think it's better to avoid overcrowding of cats with individual pics - I've been fighting with that for the past few days ;-), overcrowding with subcats is not that bad.
Btw, I don't think you could have written me first as I'm just an unregistered IP! (unless there's some magic trick I'm unaware of...)
I see your point, but maybe you should use Category:Moorland, bog, swamp instead? Or, if you want to, you can create subcategories for Category:Peat. I, too, often find overcrowded categories annoying, and break them into subcategories. Samulili (talk) 18:28, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, actually Category:Peat is a subcat of Category:Moorland,... .
Commons policy encourages using the most specific cats; also, a user looking for peat will probably go to Category:Peat directly (through the search engine), or if they visit Category:Moorland... and don't know Latin languages, they will overlook Cat:Torbiere del Sebino.
And after all, create a subcat for Category:Peat is just what I was doing in the first place ;-)
Anyway, I leave it up to you, maybe you have a specific interest in that place? I don't, I'm just going through Category:Media lacking a description, trying to fix a few files or cats here and there.

German language image

[edit]

You reverted and then protected a false image on the German language on commons. I have already addressed multiple issues (proof) months ago, as have others, (proof, proof, proof, proof) with this image on its talk page to which no one has yet responded. The image's creator Micheal Postmann, has been banned on the German Wikipedia for Nazism. (proof) It is an image that claims to be based on the German national census of 1910 but the image shows very large portions of territory outside the borders of the German Empire; in which the supposed national census took place and it claims the Dutch language was somehow German until 1910. Please revert the image my version, which has at least got the Dutch language removed (and secure it) or explain why you think the image (with mentioned source problems and nationalist/Neo-nazi creator) is accurate.B. Franken (talk) 12:23, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Where did I say I think it's accurate? If you don't like, don't use it. If you think it doesn't have any potential educational use, nominate it for deletion. Afterall, our policies say: "Images having particular national, political or religious significance including flags, emblems and maps can arouse strong passions, but Commons is not the place to decide which of various competing versions is the correct or official version. If you feel strongly that a map, emblem, flag or other file hosted here is “wrong” in some way please try to persuade your local wiki community to make use of the version you prefer instead. -- Of course, if the author has made a factual mistake that is not seriously disputed, the image (if not in use) may fail the test of being useful for an educational purpose, and can be deleted on that basis." Samulili (talk) 12:36, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You never said anything at all. You just reverted and locked the page, forcing me to presume you agree. So don't blame me for that, if you'd made the effort to write a summary there would have been no misunderstanding. Commons has a duty to protect itself from harmful, suggestive and plainly wrong (i.e nationalist) files. I have already pointed out to you how and why the map is flawed (including links proving I'm not alone, and in fact form a majority on the images talk page) and given you an alternative more accurate and far less offensive version. Yet you still refuse to undo your actions; explain why.B. Franken (talk) 17:04, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don'r know if it's flawed or not. All I know - and all I care - is that there is no revert warring. We don't need that in Commons, we have Commons:Project scope to guide us. Samulili (talk) 17:40, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You might not want edit warring but I don't want false representations. When you locked that image you locked it on the non-consensus, contested version (as I have proven to you through the links, and as is visible on the image's talk page. You made that choice. I don't care if you lock the image till kingdom come, but I will not (or ever) accept that that image is locked on the current (flawed) version. I have presented the problem, brought forward the evidence, and now its up to you to either adapt the image or bring forward a statement in which you make clear why the current version is supposedly better. B. Franken (talk) 17:46, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Commons does not necessarily aspire right or neutral point of view. Commons:Project scope. Samulili (talk) 19:32, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not add the Netherlands to the "deutsches Sprachgebiet". Dutch is not German, and it's not a German dialect either. They are similar but that's all. This is an image about the areas where people speak German, not languages similar to German. That would be like adding France and Spain to an image about "Areas where Italian is spoken". And as far as I know the Frisian language doesn't share anything with the German language so this should definitly be excluded from the image. Ah, apparently I wasn't the first to say this Ugjer (talk) 00:51, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

2nd deletion of a file I've posted

[edit]

I find it hard to accept that the files I'm uploading have a copyright violation when I am the one who owns the copyright. I am the author of the product that the screen shot is from. I give this game away for free. It seems that there is some assumption that a developer never uploads their own work. I am the developer, it is my work and I want to upload it's screen shot image and I'm okay with making it public domain. Is there some sort of process I can follow so it doesn't keep getting deleted? I'm sorry about the inconvencience and grief that I and User:Bayo have caused by deleting your work. We both seemed to miss that you (nick Redej0) are John A. Maps

[edit]

I have talked with an admin, Martin H. We agreed that all maps should be brought to the original state, as the original uploader made them (we also discussed a need for an out of scope policy for a certain map type about diplomatic missions, per my idea that was already approved on enWiki by admin Zscout370 and those locator maps are to be painted per this separate rule). If you have a problem with that please discuss the Commons policies, please take it with the admins involved as well because to my understanding it is an idea of admins that all kind of POV pushing that happened in the maps can be avoided by uploading alternative files that are different to the original (ie. Kosovo or whatever was added later) and by reverting original files to original versions. If you consider any revert a revert war then maybe you should take a more thorough approach. I had a lengthy discussion with several admins about this with many ideas and I'd like some appreciation. After almost 5 years on WP I might have shorter temper on some issues and I apologize for that but that happens only if someone is trying to fix the very complex situation quickly and over the line while my effort to solve it through serious means that require some involvement are not taken with necessary seriousness. One more thing, locking an image on your revert version is first of all bad because you are an involved party and second of all it's bad because your version doesn't correspond to the original image which is against the policy in such matters. However I do assume you had the best of intentions, that you didn't seek that outcome but the opposite however it turned out this way. For an example Martin H. made many reverts to those maps like you made one but I fixed some of them where he failed to revert to the original file version as he planned and he noted his error so there was no tension, just constructive atmosphere to solve the problem. Thanks.--Avala (talk) 20:55, 25 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Photo permissions

[edit]

Hello Samulili,

I got an e-mail notification via Wikipedia from you. I am not very firm to the images' licences, I have to send to a part of Wiki...

Two of the images (Standortfoto_Pori and Standortfoto_Duisburg)I used on the wikipedia page: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sachtleben_Chemie belong to Sachtleben Chemie (and the right as well). The other one was put on this page by another user. I only corrected the third image on this page. This is an image of Kalerna, who gave the rights to manipulate this image as I did (as I understood the wiki permission rights)

So what can I do to give the right permissions to those images?

With best regards

Deja vu all over again?

[edit]

Hello, as you seem to know about the history of File:Historisches deutsches Sprachgebiet.PNG, which might be Commons' most frequently attacked file, and about the behavior of user Special:Contributions/B._Franken, I wonder whether the contributions of Special:Contributions/Rex_Germanus, Special:Contributions/Ugjer, Special:Contributions/HP1740-B are totally unrelated? BTW: is the email interface working properly? --Matthead (talk) 01:15, 22 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That's a good question. They are of the same opinion but, in this case, I can see that many people would. And while their editing patterns are quite untypical for wikipedias, they are not unordinary on Commons.
My email should be working, I haven't tested it, though. Samulili (talk) 05:55, 22 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Finnish m/05 pattern

[edit]

Hello,

as you are the foremost Finnish copyright expert, I'd like to get your opinion on these files:

These files were uploaded by en:User:Blankku, who has repeatedly uploaded images with false copyright tags. In this case, he claimed this to be PD-self, while the pattern has been created by Pekka Vilhunen. However, although these would normally qualify for copyright, the images in question are stored into Mallinetti database: [21] as samples of a protected design. So, I think these clearly qualify for design protection (mallisuoja). However, if these are protected by design protection, the same images don't qualify for copyright. (The usual Finnish doctrine is that intellectual property may not be simultaneously covered by patent, design protection or copyright; only one of them may apply at a time.) So, I'd say that

 • if the images are protected by design protection, they are PD in the copyright sense.
 • even if the design qualified for copyright protection, these images are part of the decision of the Patentti- ja Rekisterihallitus to grant the design protection for the design. So, these fall under PD-FinlandGov.

For the moment, I've used the latter rationale to tag the images. However, we might need to delete these images, if my reasoning is incorrect. What do you think? --MPorciusCato (talk) 16:19, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for my late reply. I wouldn't consider them decisions or statements, so PD-FinlandGov doesn't apply, in my opinion. However, I've understood that the patterns are created "mathematically". While the mathematics are complex, the patterns as such may not include such human creativity which can be copyrighted. Samulili (talk) 15:53, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Samulili!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Commons:Language policy

[edit]

Hi, in an effort to move the Commons:Language policy closer to completion, I have been editing it and cleaning it up for the last few days. I have tried to make the page as neutral and consistent as possible with the relevant policy and guidleine pages that it cross references.

I would appreciate it, as someone who has discussed some of these policies in the past, if you could look at Commons talk:Language policy and contribute your thoughts. This is the version that exists as I am writing it and I am encouraging everyone to consider the "static" page until everything gets sorted out.

Please help replace this outdated license

[edit]

Hello!

Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license PD. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.

The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding PD-self if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.

Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days of today's date, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose administrator rights.

You can read the de-admin policy at Commons:Administrators/De-adminship.

Hi Samulili.
I have just some questions about the deletion process.
1) What about the duplicated images? Eg. WSTM Mark Frank 0088.jpg and WSTM Mark Frank 0089.jpg or WSTM Zefferus 0061.jpg, WSTM Zefferus 0062.jpg and WSTM Zefferus 0063.jpg. Do we really need such duplicates? In the first example the first image seems to be wiggly so why not delte this image?
2) What about images like The Squirrels 0023.jpg which show a sculpture in the USA? (no FOP in the USA for Artwork)
thanks for your answer --D-Kuru (talk) 20:09, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder if the curve is correctly aligned with the geological time scale? I have understood that Permian peak at temperature was at Permian/Triassic border rather than middle of the Permian (look for example https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permian%E2%80%93Triassic_extinction_event: "around the P–Tr boundary suggests an 8 °C (14 °F) rise in temperature"). Also in the current figure the Carboniferous-Permian glaciation is _overlaping_ this very high tempererature peak.

For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Notification about possible deletion

[edit]
Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Affected:

Category discussion warning

Tammela has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
