Thanks and a question

Are there any Flickr to Commons uploaders left that work? I'm afraid when I uploaded that photo of Jeff Sipe just as the Bryan Flickr tool crashed for good. ("Bryan" has a message that he is no longer associated with Wikimedia Commons.) Also, how can I create a category? There are a few I'd like to make, in part, to show the notability of the people in the photos that I upload for our en.wikipedia musician's biography articles. They are: the Southern rock jam band called the Allman Brothers Band, 2) Nils Lofgren, virtuoso guitarist and pianist who has been both a solo act and a member of Bruce Springsteen's band 3)Is there a category for session musicians? There are many notable musicians who make their living playing on other famous artists' records, including Waddy Wachtel (for James Taylor and Stevie Nicks), Pino Palladino (for The Who, John Mayer, Keith Richards), David Lindley (Jackson Browne, Dolly Parton, Curtis Mayfield), Alun Davies (for Cat Stevens, Nicky Hopkins, Yusuf Islam). IN FACT, someone uploaded her own photo of Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens) using Creative Commons, but the category she added it to, "Yusuf Islam" doesn't exist. What can be done? --Leahtwosaints (talk) 02:30, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes – I've just done some playing around (as you can see below) and this bot is still working. You need a TUSC password for it (see the link below).iridescent 18:46, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for answering me. But, have you USED the TUSC account? I signed up for one over a year ago, and then again last week:
 • [TUSC token ca37d4596538642fdbfe8fff626f76b3]
 • [TUSC token eaf549f4c87f57b14ca6acbf08b3404e]

I suppose the second one, most recent is operative now? If so, then my next problem is understanding what to put into those boxes on THIS bot. Please understand; I've got about 3 years of nearly nonstop editing on the en.wikipedia, but only in the last 6 months have I been using Commons; and that was only to upload photos that were missing on many biography articles. The whole time I used that upload tool from Flickr I'd email people with good photos there and ask them to remove their copyright from the image and pick a Creative Commons license instead-- BY, BY-CC, or BY-SA-CC. Those were the only uploads acceptable, and if you see my Wikipedia userpage, (I only recently began listing some there- probably 1/4 of them, it was a joyful feeling to be able to add a photo to a biography page! But now, I feel overwhelmed. Looking at my talk page, it's either silence --see how long? Or, people speaking, but for the most part, really talking over my head. I want to know things! I want to learn! I can help sort photos-- you can't imagine the number of musicians' faces I've seen now by browsing people's photostreams in Flickr and uploading many more! But I was in a coma 4 years ago and suffered some memory loss. (At first it was so major, I couldn't find my keys, sitting next to my hand!) But it was always more speaking of short-term memory compared to long-term memory, and I've gotten more and more of it back every day, though I suspect it's still a problem. Anyway, you seem to really understand it! Will you help teach me here? --Leahtwosaints (talk) 21:24, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

It was definitely working for me yesterday, as I tested it (see File:The Golden Lion, Fulham.jpg, uploaded using it). You need to set up the TUSC account with "commons" as the project name, not "en", despite what the instructions say.
I'm not really the best person to teach anything here; although my Commons history looks large, it consists almost entirely of uploading pictures that I need for specific articles on en-wiki, and I have no real knowledge of Commons policies and procedures, or of the software behind it. You're better off asking at Commons:Village pump, or User:Durova may be willing to help, or to suggest someone who can.
If your TUSC account is working, for "Flickr URL" you need to cut-and-paste the full URL that appears in your browser bar when you're viewing the image in Flickr (e.g. http://www.flickr.com/photos/earthandeden/395466458/ or similar), and "New name" is whatever you want the Commons file to be called (remember to put .jpg on the end!). Remember, "Only search within Creative Commons-licensed content", "Find content to use commercially" and "Find content to modify, adapt, or build upon" all need to be checked in the search bar when you're searching for images, otherwise Commons can't accept them and the bot will reject it automatically.iridescent 00:26, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Yellow tags for unchecked images

I've run into a couple of images here that never were checked to see if they really did fill the GDFL license (or at least one that's OK) An example is this one: [1] I don't see how it can really be checked, but for ones with a link to Flickr where I CAN tell, how do I remove the yellow warning tag if it is OK? And, who do I contact if it's not a free photo? --Leahtwosaints (talk) 10:50, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

To remove the yellow tag, edit the page and remove the part that says:

on the description page. If it's a copyright violation, put Copyvio on the page and someone should delete it.iridescent 18:00, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Notification about possible deletion

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

There are probably quite a few of these; the announcement of the Flickr 1000-image cap prompted my shunting across a huge stack of images I'd been saving for potential future use, which ordinarily I wouldn't have brought across en masse as they tend to be in batches of a dozen or so very similar shots of the same subject. In some cases, Oath's deletion script will have caught up with them before the review bot got the chance to verify them—at the time lots of other people were engaged in an identical scramble to extract material from Flickr before it was lost, so the lag between uploading and verification (which is usually almost instant) was much longer than normal.iridescent 07:26, 12 September 2019 (UTC)

Hi Iridescent, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

 • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the Rename template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
 • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.

Hi! Many of your uploads are in this category. If they come from your Flickr account perhaps you could make a comment on Flickr with a link to your page on Commons. That way it is verified that you control both accounts. Then you can change the source on Commons to own. --MGA73 (talk) 21:16, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

@MGA73, per my comment a few threads up there will be quite a few of these from around May and June, when I was racing to transfer uploads across from Flickr before their new owner's deletion-bot caught up with them. (It looks like there are only between 10 or 20 which were deleted before the review bot could approve them, which out of around 30,000 images is quite a high success rate). Most of these are marginal-value images which I was keeping parked on Flickr and only brought across once the problems since the SmugMug takeover became apparent. Because they're quite low-value—it makes no particular difference to Commons or to our re-users whether we have 15 or 20 near-identical shots of the same thing from multiple angles—I'm not too worried about the occasional one being deleted here or there. There shouldn't be any more that cause issues, as SmugMug have now changed their terms such that CC-licensed photos are now skipped by their deletionbot. I'm still trying to move the rest of the batch across, as it's the worst kept secret on the internet that Flickr is in dire financial trouble and likely to close at some point, but I presume there will be adequate notice if the worst happens.iridescent 21:35, 5 February 2020 (UTC)
File:Merton & Sutton Joint Cemetery 20170802 120800 (33920233338).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Remember if it is own work you could just change the source to own and perhaps make an edit on Flickr to confirm that it is your Flickr account. MGA73 (talk) 15:51, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

@MGA73 My Flickr account] already confirms that this is me ("Also User:Iridescent on Wikimedia projects"). I've changed the attribution to own on a couple of them that are of potential use, but most of these ones that Flickrreviewbot didn't pick up are of such marginal value it's probably not worth the time it would take to change the licensing on them.iridescent 23:50, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
Thats Great! You could also upload your photos directly to Commons as own work. No need to send them via Flickr! I will check the DRs after work. --MGA73 (talk) 05:50, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
@MGA73 In theory yes, but we're talking upwards of 30,000 images, and Commons is deeply shitty at handling batch uploads. The alternative to using Flickr2Commons would be downloading ≈150gb of data from Flickr onto my computer, laboriously categorising each one, trusting to the neither-stable-nor-user-friendly Pattypan to actually do what it's supposed to, and then uploading the same 150gb of data.iridescent 08:14, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
Question is if all 30k images are relevant. If they are then you should of course go ahead. I don't see how uploading via Flickr should improve categorizing for example. Perhaps someone know a good way of uploading the images? It would be nice to have a better way. --MGA73 (talk) 08:33, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
I checked Commons:Upload_tools#Standalone_desktop_applications but that did not help me. Do you know how to use a bot? If yes that may be a way to do it. --MGA73 (talk) 08:37, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
Most of them are already uploaded; there are only about 5000 left to go. All of them are in scope so that isn't an issue (in the past I kept the images parked on Flickr and only uploaded them here as and when I needed them for articles, but with Flickr likely to shut down soon I want them out of there). I see nothing to be gained by downloading them from Flickr then re-uploading purely for the sake of avoiding Flickr2Commons, unless F2C starts malfunctioning.iridescent 09:18, 27 February 2020 (UTC)
