First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

[edit]
2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Autopatrol given

[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 01:43, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States - Thank You!

[edit]

Hi there! Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States. We're excited to see people uploading thousands of photos from all over the country! You and others have collectively uploaded 4,929 photos so far, all of which are viewable at Category:Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States (sorted by state).

We encourage you to continue contributing through the rest of the month. Uploading your photos of monuments isn't the only way to contribute, however. If you're interested, we have compiled a list of auxiliary ways to contribute - which include improving Wikipedia's coverage of historic and cultural sites, as well as finding existing free photos that can be shared on the Commons. While these contributions don't count towards the contest, we are still keeping track of them and they are great ways to contribute to the spirit of the project.

If you are interesting in contributing to Wikipedia, WikiProject National Register of Historic Places is also great place to start. The WikiProject showcases the work that has been done so far in covering NRHP sites, and can also help you find articles that need improving.

If you're on Twitter, give us a follow @WLMUnitedStates for updates, news, and more.

If you have any questions between now or the end of the month, feel free to leave a message on my talk page. Thank you! ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 09:28, 21 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States during the month of October! The United States contest saw over 1,700 people contribute over 11,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States and its territories. In addition to National Register of Historic Places sites, we welcomed uploads of sites designated by state- and local-level historical institutions and societies. Hundreds of these photos are already being used to illustrate Wikipedia articles!

We're excited to announce that our national judging process has concluded, and that we have selected the winners of Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States! We were amazed by all of the uploads, and regret having to narrow it down to just 10. That being said – congratulations to our national winners and their amazing shots! Our 10 winners will be sent to the international Wiki Loves Monuments jury, who will then select the winners of the international contest. If you're interested in seeing the winners of the other various national contests as they are announced, you may do so at Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 winners.

Finally, we have also created a feedback form for all participants in the United States to fill out. The survey is optional and anonymous, and only takes a minute or two – we hope to use the feedback to organize better events in the future!

Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2016, and we hope to see you again for future Commons photography events! ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 06:28, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Categories, intent

[edit]

What were you meaning to do here? You removed a category that exists, and replaced it with one that does not. - Jmabel ! talk 03:59, 15 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, is that not right? I thought it was better to create more narrow, specific categories. I just created the new category now. Hope it's OK. - Kenneth C. Zirkel (talk) 15:20, 15 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's certainly more reasonable now that you created the category but, still: there isn't anything else in the category, so I'd think it's not very useful. Basically, unless a category has a corresponding Wikipedia article, or fits a pattern where it would be odd for that category to be missing (e.g. part of a sequence), I'd hesitate to create a new category that doesn't have at least 3 members. Makes it harder rather than easier to find actual photos based on criteria that are at all broad. - Jmabel ! talk 01:45, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I get what you're saying, I think, but, doesn't the category series "(year) bronze statues in (country)" constitute a sequence here? Perhaps I misunderstand, but it appeared to me that the long-term project was to move statue into the sequence "(year) bronze statues in (country)" instead of just "Bronze statues in (country)". If that is the case, then naturally some particular statue has to be first for a given year, yes? And eventually, over time, more and more statues would be moved into that category. Given that there are hundreds of thousands of statues in the United States (maybe millions?), I wouldn't think the category would have a single entry for long. And I don't see it's really practical to look up statues made ina given year and move them (although I guess I could do that). I'm not clear on wiki rules, so I'll gladly stop if I'm wrong. --Kenneth C. Zirkel (talk) 22:31, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I guess it is a sequence, although those are so sparse! Hardly any have more than a couple of entries.
It might be more useful if that template for those categories had some navigation; I'll do that. - Jmabel ! talk 22:55, 16 May 2017 (UTC) [reply]
I see, it's there, after a fashion: someone "rolled their own". Guess they didn't know about Decade years navbox. - Jmabel ! talk 22:59, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've just been copying what I found there. If you could point me to a good example, I'd be glad to use it going forward. --Kenneth C. Zirkel (talk) 00:31, 17 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose it is somewhat a matter of taste, but I like the look of the navigation resulting from, for example, Template:Seattleyear (which uses Decade years navbox) a lot better than what results from Template:Bronze statues in USA category. See Category:1969 in Seattle for an example of the result of Decade years navbox.
Anyway, given that this is part of a sequence, this all makes more sense. I had no way to know that when it was just a red category link. - Jmabel ! talk 03:02, 17 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! My name is Kevin, one of the organizers of Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States. Last year, you contributed to our 2016 event. It was a great success thanks to you and many others, with over 1,700 people contributing over 11,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States. Over 1,000 of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, making our open knowledge about United States history and heritage all the better.

I'm pleased to say that we're back this year with Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States, and I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our updated event page for more information, including updated tips, lists, and prizes. Like last year, you'll be able to upload your new photos of any registered historical site in the United States through the end of September (even if the photos were taken before this month).

The United States contest saw over 1,400 people (the most of any nation this year) contribute over 8,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States and its territories. Hundreds of these photos are already being used to illustrate pages on various Wikimedia projects.

We're excited to announce that our national judging process has concluded, and that we have selected the winners of Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States! These photos are recognized for their photographic quality, artistic merit, and their encyclopedic value as illustrations of unique historical sites. We were amazed by all of the uploads, and regret only being able to formally recognize the top 10. That being said – congratulations to our national winners and their amazing shots! File transfers

[edit]

Hi, please only do file transfers if you do proper after care. Jcb (talk) 21:23, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

That is my intention. I apologize if there was a problem. If you let me know what I missed, I'd be glad to fix it. - Kenneth C. Zirkel (talk) 21:26, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If the copyright situation is unclear, then don't transfer it. Only transfer files that are obviously compatible with COM:L. Also make sure that both the 'author' and the 'source' field are not empty. Jcb (talk) 21:36, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Assuming you're referring to the file "File:Cornell Armory.jpg", that page says it is public domain because it was published prior to January 1, 1923. So ... it's OK to transfer. Yes? Or are you talking abut a different file? - Kenneth C. Zirkel (talk) 22:58, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
File:White Hall 1920.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

September 30th is the last day to upload photos for Wiki Loves Monuments! We're thrilled that the United States has almost reached 4,000 contributions so far this year. Of these images, ~370 (~9%) have already been used to help illustrate Wikipedia articles and pages on other wiki projects, which is fantastic.

If you've already made a photo contribution this year, thanks so much! If you have any last-minute photos of U.S. historical sites to upload and enter into the contest, today's the day to do it. Check out the United States event page for more information. Judging will take place throughout the month of October, after which the top-ten national finalists will be announced in early November.

If you've traveled and taken photos of monuments in non-US countries, you can see if those countries are also participating here.

Thanks for uploading File:Brown University Pembroke Hall LOC det 4a13610.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. Photographs of Brown University campus

[edit]

Hey Kzirkel, Thank you for uploading so many great photographs of the Brown university campus! The articles on and relating to the school have undoubtedly benefited from the addition of your photos. There remain a few landmark campus buildings, however, for which only low quality images exist. The next time you are in the Providence area, would you consider photographing following structures?

John Hay Library, Lyman Hall, Salomon Center, 85 Waterman Street, 182 George Street, Prince Engineering Laboratory, Watson Center of Information Technology

Thank you so much! Filetime (talk) 03:12, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I've added them to my shot list. - Kenneth C. Zirkel (talk) 17:33, 1 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
One additional thing. If you're in the city and it's not too much trouble would you also consider getting a few shots of a RIPTA bus? The existing pictures like File: RIPTA Gillig Low Floor 0517.jpg are really low quality. Thank you so much!Filetime (talk) 22:57, 16 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! Kevin from Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States here. I know it's been a tough year for everyone, and I hope this message finds you well.

You are receiving this message as a participant in last year's Wiki Loves Monuments 2019 in the United States. First, a recap: We concluded with over 5,200 great photos of U.S. historical sites made possible by contributors like you. If you haven't yet seen, last year's U.S. winners are viewable here, and the international winners here (including multiple from the United States!).

Second, as you may have seen from the banner notices on Wikipedia, this year's Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in the United States has been running through October instead of September in consideration of the pandemic and the hectic start of the fall season. Despite the challenges of the year, we're thrilled that the United States has surpassed 5,000 photo contributions so far.

October 31st is the last day to upload photos for the U.S. competition this year. If you've already contributed, thank you so much - and it's great to have you again this year! If you haven't yet contributed but are interested in participating again, you're invited to join us during these last couple days. Check out the United States event page for more information. Remember that you are welcome to upload and submit photos of historic sites that you've taken any time in the past, not just this month.

As always, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 07:20, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Dear Kzirkel,

Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2020, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again for a few minutes of your time. To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey.

Please fill in this short survey and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2020.

Kind regards,

Clarke Street Meeting House

On your next trip to Newport could you snap a photograph of the Ezra Stiles House by any chance? The only existing photograph on Commons is of really poor quality. Thank you so much. Filetime (talk) 21:58, 2 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I'll put it on my shot list. I was thinking I'd try to get back to Newport at least one more time before the coming post-COVID rush of summer tourists. Really nice bicycling there. - Kenneth C. Zirkel (talk) 17:53, 3 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I took and uploaded a new photo of the Ezra Stiles House. Not much I could do about the cars parked in front. I also photographed his church across the street, but it's a tough one, with the trees and cars on the narrow street. Let me know if you have any more Newport requests, I'll almost certainly be back soon. - Kenneth C. Zirkel (talk) 19:47, 8 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Request?

[edit]

Hello. I noticed the most recent photo on Commons taken in Hicksville, NY was taken by you. If you happen to live there or nearby, can I make a request for you to make a photo of a small temple in the city? There is currently no free photo available of it and it would go well for a Wikipedia page. --Weaveravel (talk) 10:35, 20 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be glad to give it a try next time I'm in town. You'd need to give me the address, though. - Kenneth C. Zirkel (talk) 10:42, 20 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. It's the AsaMai Temple, I'd like to have it on the Afghan-Americans wikipedia page. Google says the address is 80 E Barclay St. --Weaveravel (talk) 11:07, 20 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Nice one, I'll add it to my shot list. I've driven by that place before and considered photographing it, but it can be very busy there. I love the idea of giving more representation to the Asian and Hindu community of Hicksville. I do get a little worried sometimes that people might take it the wrong way if I stop the car and take photos of their temple; people can get defensive and assume I'm up to no good. But I will try to go early in the morning when nobody is around, probably during December holidays. - Kenneth C. Zirkel (talk) 13:06, 20 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Good one, thanks for your willingness. I do want to better document the lives of Afghan-Americans (including their Hindu community) since it is pretty lacking on Wikipedia and there's no free photos I found that I can add. It would be great if you or others can make more contributions of Afghan-American lives like businesses, events etc. in the form of photography. --Weaveravel (talk) 15:20, 20 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to do what I can. Feel free to drop me other suggestions. - Kenneth C. Zirkel (talk) 19:34, 20 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I don't live anywhere near there so I can only rely on pages online. This Afghan Hindu temple is a good one to take and arguably the best example of that particular community, but another one would be the "Anshei Shalom" in Jamaica, Queens, NYC, which is apparently the only Afghan synagogue in the US. A photo of that would go well in the Wikipedia article about Jewish Afghans. However there must be a photograph depicting the general culture of Afghan Americans and the only thing in my mind is Nowroz (New Year) celebrations in March. As these are events and not standalone buildings, I cannot say much more than that other than if you are willing to look locally for public events of the Afghan community in NY, one of the main concentrations in the country. And since I don't live there I cannot tell whether there are other public places or institutions of the Afghan community, like markets or museums. But I thank you for your response and willingness! --Weaveravel (talk) 12:55, 21 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Kzirkel: I'm currently working on many Afghanistan articles and wanted to say, when you happen to take some of these photos and uploaded them to Commons, could you ping me on my talk page so I'd know? --WR 14:10, 8 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kenneth,

I've trying to find out the exact tree species in your photo. Since I've noticed that you are very active user I'm wondering why I haven't asked you in the first place.

Is there w:flowering dogwood on Taunton Green?

Kind regards, Schleckbrausefüllung (talk) 11:38, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Schleck ... I don't know from trees. It certainly seems possible that those are flowering dogwood, but I cannot say for sure. Sorry I am not more helpful than that. - ~~~ Kzirkel (talk) 01:13, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Photos of Korea

[edit]

Hello, I wanted to thank you for sharing your father's photos of Korea. It's very generous of you to do so. He was there during a historic time; sadly many photos from that period are still under copyright.

As a side request, if you have any other of his photos from Korea that you'd be willing to upload, I can make a specific effort to use them for articles on Wikipedia. I wrote an article about the building pictured here on Wikipedia: w:Keijō Post Office. All the best, Toobigtokale (talk) 22:50, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I wish I had more. But alas, he was a young man without much money and film was expensive. I uploaded everything I have that seemed worthwhile. I'll take another look at some point, but I don't think there are any gems left unscanned. - Kzirkel (talk) 13:38, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Still, thank you. The picture of Keijō Post Office he got was fairly unique, as far as I can tell. My guess, but a significant majority of cameras in Korea at that time belonged to foreigners. Consequently many photos people even in Korea see of the Korean War are those of foreigners. If you can find anything, please let me know. Best, Toobigtokale (talk) 19:55, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Warren announcement

[edit]

Hello, File:Michelle Wu, Boston City Council Member.jpg is such a great photo, and it is so valuable of you to have reased a quality photo of Wu under a commons license at a time where no others were to be found under similar free licensing:

I am curious whether you still have other photos you might have taken of Warren’s announcement, and as to whether you’d be willing to similarly upload/release any (or if you are super-incredibly generous, all) of those?

that’d be so appreciated if you did!

if you do, let me know.

regardless, thank you so much for having uploaded the photo of Wu all those years back! SecretName101 (talk) 04:25, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

File:Samsung Ridgefield Park, New Jerey.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

Japanese School in Greenwich, CT

[edit]

Hello! Will you be back in Greenwich, CT? If so, I found the Japanese School of New York/Greenwich Japanese School moved to a new address (6 Riverside Avenue, Riverside, CT 06878). We only have images of the school at its old Greenwich address. When you have a chance, would you be interested in photographing its new building?

Thank you, WhisperToMe (talk) 14:53, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Seems unlikely, to be honest. But I'll make a note of it, just in case. Kzirkel (talk) 00:05, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
