Templates
[edit]Hi Eatcha. I recently noticed this thread. I just wanted to let you know that I'm somehow familiar with templates, but I couldn't understand what we need. Can you please explain it a little bit? Thank you. Ahmadtalk 12:34, 14 October 2019 (UTC)
- Hello Ahmad, I fixed the template issue before the FVC-Bot got activated/flagged. At that time I was not familiar with wiki templates. Thanks for your interest in this issue, I will let you know if I get stuck somewhere in the future. Best, Eatcha (talk) 15:34, 14 October 2019 (UTC)
- Got it, thanks. Actually, I forgot to check the opening date of the thread, so I thought the issue was still there. Ahmadtalk 15:38, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

Recent changes
- You can now use more advanced editing tools on the mobile web. You can turn them on and off in your preferences in the mobile version. [1]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 15 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 16 October. It will be on all wikis from 17 October (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 16 October at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Internet Explorer 6 and 7 are no longer supported. This means the browsers might start looking a bit weird. They will not get security support. You can't read Wikimedia wikis in Internet Explorer on Windows XP or Windows versions that are older than Windows XP. This is because almost no one uses the browsers anymore. Supporting them made the wikis less secure for everyone else. [2]
- In the future section headings might have a share link. This is to make it easier to link to the section. You can read more and discuss.

Recent changes
- The API sandbox and help pages now show more clearly when API modules are marked as
internal
. API modules marked as internal were probably internal before. It was easier to miss. You should look for non-internal alternatives. [3]
Problems
- There is a translation tool we use on wikis with more than one language. For a few days it did not create pages for new languages when someone translated a page. The languages did not show in the language bar. This has been fixed. [4]
- The history and diffs can show wrong content. This is because of a cache problem. It will soon be fixed. [5]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 22 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 23 October. It will be on all wikis from 24 October (calendar).
- Reference Previews will be a beta feature on all Wikipedias and some Wikivoyages. It shows you a preview of the footnote when you hover over or click on the number. It has been a beta feature on German and Arabic Wikipedia since April.
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 23 October. See how to join.

Code issues in User:Eatcha/curt.js
[edit]Hi Eatcha, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.
Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:
- You edited User:Eatcha/curt.js. Glad to see you coding in javascript! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
- Though, that change appears to introduce 1 new esprima issue — the page's status is now having ERRORS. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
- To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in javascript writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. If you prefer not getting spammed by me, you can opt-out reports by adding {{ValidationOptOut|type=all}} to your user page or cmb-opt-out anywhere on your your global user page on Meta. Good luck at Wikimedia Commons and happy hacking!

Recent changes
- You can post proposals for the Community Wishlist Survey. The survey decides what the Community Tech team will work on. You can post proposals until 11 November. You can vote on proposals from 20 November to 2 December. This year the wishlist will focus on Wikibooks, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikiversity, Wikispecies, Wikivoyage and Wikinews. You can read more about the format for this year.
- Mobile users now have a specific design for their Watchlist. [6][7]
- You can share feedback and ideas on the Desktop Improvements project. The goal is to make the interface easier to use for readers and editors without removing any functionality. The Foundation's Readers Web team will work on this over the next two years.
- OOUI now allows using
px
(pixels) instead ofem
(em) for some specific cases. [8][9]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 October. It will be on all wikis from 31 October (calendar).

Future changes
- There will be no software changes from 19 December to 2 January. The first MediaWiki version next year will come the week of 6 January. [10]
- Gadgets and user scripts can access variables about the current page in JavaScript. In 2015, this information was moved from global variables named
wg*
tomw.config
. The old global variables will be removed later this year. You can know more about it and tell the developers if you want to try this out on your wiki first.

FV categories
[edit]There is Category:Featured videos which has been there for longer time, and Category:Featured videos on Wikimedia Commons, which you have recently created. What is the difference? Shouldn't both be merged? --A.Savin 00:16, 29 October 2019 (UTC)
- ASavin Maybe some users treat the Category:Featured videos as a category for featured films. Revision of File:1937-05-10 Special Release - Zeppelin Explodes Scores Dead.ogv Revision of File:Bobby Bumps' Fourth (1917).webm. I didn't remove the category to avoid conflict, Category:Featured videos on Wikimedia Commons may also be useful if other projects(say wiki voyage) decide to start theirs on FV competition. Should I remove the categories? Or If there was/is an FV competition on another wiki? Best,-- Eatcha (talk) 02:53, 29 October 2019 (UTC)
- There is no FV evaluation on other projects AFAIK and unlikely to be ever established: remember that videos are not often used, for example, in Wikipedia articles or Wikivoyage guides, and it is controversial if even local Featured Pictures should exist (except EN and maybe Persian, all are meanwhile inactive). In short, I think, Category:Featured videos on Wikimedia Commons is to be merged into Category:Featured videos. --A.Savin 13:19, 29 October 2019 (UTC)
- A.Savin What about the file difference? 140 in Category:Featured videos(contains all videos from Category:Featured videos on Wikimedia Commons + 59 non-FV videos ) and 81 in Category:Featured videos on Wikimedia Commons. -- Eatcha (talk) 13:25, 29 October 2019 (UTC)
- AFAIK, before we had FVC videos could be nominated on FPC just like photos. So for FPC promoted videos the Category:Featured videos was created, but it was added by hand, not via the "Featured"-template. Now we have the separate COM:FV galleries, but the assessment procedure is basically the same, except that COM:FVC is now at a different place rather than COM:FPC. But all formerly promoted videos should be handled the same way as recently promoted via FVC. So, all Featured videos (no matter if FPC or FVC promoted) should be in FV galleries and included in FV category via template. That is, Category:Featured videos on Wikimedia Commons is to be merged into Category:Featured videos, the latter is to be included in the assessment template, and all featured videos are to be tagged with this assessment template (and included in Category:Featured videos). --A.Savin 14:15, 29 October 2019 (UTC)

Loading obfuscated javascript from pastebin (why are you even doing that?)
[edit]Hello.
I've just made an edit to your user JS to comment out your loading of obfuscated javascript from Pastebin [11]. I've no idea why you're doing that, or what it's trying to achieve (I've got better things to be doing than reverse engineering it), but please stop doing so.
Loading JS from offsite is not reccommended generally, and with CSP changes in the future it will break completely anyway.
Reedy (WMF) (talk) 21:29, 1 August 2019 (UTC)
- Okay will not load anything from any external sites, will remove that thing from my local JS include file. Looks like I triggered some kinda detection system because of that script. It's something I just don't want to have on Media-wiki servers, nor do I want anyone to read that script. But it's completely harmless. Best, Eatcha (talk) 07:33, 2 August 2019 (UTC)

- It even doesn't let you operate the cursor freely due pointer-events set 'none', which is undesirable IMO. -- Eatcha (talk) 11:23, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
- Well, undo.js is a script for adding an undo button to a diff page on mobile since the MobileFrontend lacks this feature. It only works on mobile. See the documentation on meta-wiki to know how to use it. The script should load on https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MobileDiff/373614850 if you installed it correctly. The Internet Archive and video files
[edit]I saw at "File:A trip through japan with the ywca ca 1919.webm" that there is a link for the Internet Archive's Wayback machine, which is awesome. But that link is "https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJ3RteagLoY" which only saves a new link, could you also add a link for the way that the original website looked at the time of upload, this is because if someone uploads a free video that isn't in the public domain but then doesn't immediately click on the link then now archived version of the page will be viewable for Wikimedia Commons license reviewers. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 20:35, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
Unrelated to the above, but could you please write a piece about this process and how it works over at "Commons:Archive external links#Video files", as the community voted in what you implemented and it would be handy to document it on this page as a model for others to emulate on other file types. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 20:38, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
- On clicking https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJ3RteagLoY , what I see is at https://i.ibb.co/kK0Vssh/Screenshot-2019-11-06-Wayback-Machine.png . It shows all the archived versions of that page. If a link is not archived, it shows suggestions to archive the link. What do you mean by "which only saves a new link"? IMHO it saves a new link if IA doesn't have that link already archived is not the case try: https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://i.ibb.co/kK0Vssh/Screenshot-2019-11-06-Wayback-Machine.png

If you want that archive link to show the oldest archive, I don't know if there is a URL argument to do it. Most likely there isn't.

- Yeah, I probably should've asked before jumping to conclusions, for whatever reason I can't use "https://web.archive.org/web/" on my Microsoft Lumia 950 XL phablet, it always displays the text "Hmm, we can’t reach this page. Try this Make sure that you’ve got the right web address: https://web.archive.org Refresh the page Search for what you want" and I've had that issue since last year, I need to check "https://web.archive.org/web/" on my Elephone P8 Mini otherwise I can't view anything. I can't save anything because of that so I didn't see any saves. Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!
[edit]Hello,
Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.
I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!
From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.
If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.
Thank you!

[edit]Hi. I invited Mostafameraji to com:FVC and he has uploaded some videos. I wanted to know your opinion and if any of these videos could be featured. Best, Hanooz 18:13, 8 November 2019 (UTC)
- File:Carpentry 08.ogv
- File:Istanbul 01.ogv
- File:İstanbul Akvaryum 01.ogv
- File:Tbilisi (10).ogv (it's diffrent from other videos, FV for me but I'm not sure)
- File:İstanbul Akvaryum 04.ogv or File:İstanbul Akvaryum 04.ogv (not sure which one is better)
- File:Bmx Life 01.ogv (symmetric, FV for me. It's also diffrent from other videos. FV for me)
And yes, files should have an English description. Although there are many languages already present in the description area, most participants understand English. Thanks, Eatcha (talk) 03:49, 9 November 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you. Hanooz 06:36, 9 November 2019 (UTC)

MOTD bot
[edit]Hi, until now the MOTD assessment box was put into an "Assessment" section, now your bot puts it into the description section (before the license section and moving the license information down and out of view (with the structured data already moving everything down)). Is there a reason for this? --C.Suthorn (talk) 16:23, 17 November 2019 (UTC)
- C.Suthorn, you want the bot to place it below the license section ? I am just following what I noticed in other motds tagged by un-related users. I can put that under the license section, but almost everyone likes it above the license section you may check past potds/motds to verify my claim. Thanks --Eatcha (talk) 16:35, 17 November 2019 (UTC)
- Well, I did that before I posted here and I can't remember to have it actually seen different?

- Yeah I am gonna ask for the same thing. Could your bot please put the motd template under the section
=={{Assessment}}==
, which should appear underneath the section licence (if it exists).--Roy17 (talk) 14:36, 20 November 2019 (UTC)- Roy You meant append the motd template ? The problem is many users want the
=={{Assessment}}==
above the license, if you participate at COM:FP you would know. Some users even fight to take credit for nominating an Image. I don't have any problem with videos, but a featured picture "I am afraid of getting attacked/criticized/revenge votes etc". -- Eatcha (talk) 14:42, 20 November 2019 (UTC)- Well I dont know what preferences others have. I dont mind Assessment appearing above Licence, but motd should go under Assessment.
- But the layout of Description Licence Assessment seems to make more sense, because most files only have the standard Description Licence sections. If an additional section appears, it probably should go after the other two.--Roy17 (talk) 14:52, 20 November 2019 (UTC)

Problems
- You will be able to read but not to edit some wikis for up to 30 minutes on 26 November at 06:00 (UTC). You can see which wikis. It will probably last much shorter than 30 minutes. This will also affect the
centralauth
database. This could for example affect changing passwords, logging in to new wikis, changing emails or global renames. [14]
Changes later this week
- You can soon vote on proposals for the Community Wishlist Survey. The survey decides what the Community Tech team will work on. You can vote on proposals from 20 November to 2 December. This year the wishlist will focus on Wikibooks, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikiversity, Wikispecies, Wikivoyage and Wikinews. You can read more about the format for this year.
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 20 November at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join.

What's this
[edit]https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Richard_Stallman&diff=prev&oldid=26236008 -- Eatcha (talk) 17:50, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
Would you kindly withdraw your nomination. You inspired me to research this film which is in the public domain. I plan to upload to files (the entire film and a crop of the speech) and nominate both. I hope your would agree these would be much better. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 15:07, 23 November 2019 (UTC)
- Actually forget what I said. This version is edited and does not contain the entire speech. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 15:13, 23 November 2019 (UTC)
- Done Coffeeandcrumbs -- Eatcha (talk) 15:15, 23 November 2019 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!
[edit]The Technical Barnstar | |
Thanks for all the work that you've done to improve our FPC processes. I know that some users (including me) look like they don't see it but we do see it and really appreciate your improvements. The last one (automatic marking POTD with a template) is great, thanks again! All the best Podzemnik (talk) 07:38, 25 November 2019 (UTC) |
- Podzemnik, what's your opinion about a notification to the uploader? See the above example for MOTD. --Eatcha (talk) 07:42, 25 November 2019 (UTC)
- I think it's good. There are some users including me who have pictures on the main page quite often, but I'd always appreciate getting a notification about it. --Podzemnik (talk) 07:47, 25 November 2019 (UTC)
- ...what I was trying to say was that newbies and inexperienced users who would have 1 picture or 1 video on the main page in their wiki life times would definitely appreciate a notification about it. Experienced users who do regular contributions to the POTD or MOTD would get relatively a lot of notifications but they're used to them and I don't think it'd bother them. So yes, go for it :) --Podzemnik (talk) 08:03, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

Changes later this week
- The mobile beta mode will be disabled to have less maintenance. The developers will focus on the desktop improvements project. You can turn on advanced mobile contributions mode if you want to see the categories. You could also jump back to the top. This can instead be done with a gadget or user script. [15]
- Parsoid is software we use for the visual editor, content translation, Flow and the Android app. This has been rewritten. It will come to the wikis gradually over the next two weeks. It has been tested, but there could be some diffs or previews that don't look right. If you see any you can report them. [16]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 26 November. It will be on the other wikis next week (calendar). This is because of holidays.
Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 27 November at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- You will switch between the article and the talk page in a new way in the mobile view in the future. It will use tabs. This is more like in the desktop view. [17]
