Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

.. and others. It does not make sense to categorize any pictures in Category:Buildings by architect. Either you know the architect, then use the cat thats there (for example Category:Buildings by Leslie Green) or create one with the architects name. If you don't know the architect, just leave this cat off. TomAlt (talk) 22:51, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:44, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Great Northern, Piccadilly and/& Brompton Railway
[edit]Hi, I'm not clear why you created Category:Great Northern, Piccadilly & Brompton Railway when Category:Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway already existed. I carefully selected the name of the category as using "and" not "&" in order to match the wikipedia article w:Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway.
Further, not sure why you made it, and also Category:Baker Street and Waterloo Railway, sub-categories of Category:London Underground maps when my intention for both Category:Baker Street and Waterloo Railway and Category:Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway was that they would be for all BS&W or GNP&B images, not just maps. It just happens that the maps are all that I'd got around to categorising; in fact at the moment I am concentrating on the Railway Clearing House junction diagrams, and have been building a logical hierarchical structure for these, involving the categories whose names include the letters "RJD" (Railway Junction Diagram).
Taking Category:Baker Street and Waterloo Railway RJD as an example, here's how I set it up:
- Category:Baker Street and Waterloo Railway RJD is sub to Category:Baker Street and Waterloo Railway and to Category:London Underground RJD
- Category:Baker Street and Waterloo Railway is sub to Category:London Underground
- Category:London Underground RJD is sub to Category:London Underground
Might I suggest the following structure instead - there's an extra level for maps, in between the RJD and the railway:
- Category:Baker Street and Waterloo Railway RJD sub to Category:Baker Street and Waterloo Railway maps and to Category:London Underground RJD
- Category:Baker Street and Waterloo Railway maps sub to Category:Baker Street and Waterloo Railway and to Category:London Underground maps
- Category:Baker Street and Waterloo Railway sub to Category:London Underground
- Category:London Underground RJD sub to Category:London Underground maps
- Category:London Underground maps sub to Category:London Underground
with an identical structure across the whole of LU for all the other companies (Met., Met.Dist., CLR, C&SL etc.). --Redrose64 (talk) 21:43, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Hi David. For your information I've just reverted this to the old version since your file had a problem with thumbnail generation. I don't know the exact reason but it must have been something internal in the image file with a code library because I got error messages of that sort when clicking the thumbnail text. I'm no graphics expert but I guess this might occur while using open source tools like GIMP with a bug in the SVG layer coding or something. Regards, De728631 (talk) 23:27, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Down Street tube station plan.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

- Surprised I uploaded without a license included. I noticed a spelling error in the title so have uploaded with a corrected file name and a license at File:Royal Commission on London Traffic - Tramway Improvements.png.DavidCane (talk) 11:09, 3 September 2020 (UTC)
