Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Re: Hex color identification

[edit]

Because the compression is so heavy on this image, I've decided to pull the colours from http://www.itsportsnet.com/leagues/7711/graphics/acha.gif, which seems to be a more exact logo.

The blue interior is:

 1. 100069

The red interior is

 1. D63136

Also, check out http://www.nattyware.com/pixie.php, which is a fantastically small stand-alone colour-picker program. Really good for situations like this.Huntster (t @ c) 06:13, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming of "File:CityCountyBuildingPittsburgh.JPG"

[edit]

You requested for the file "File:CityCountyBuildingPittsburgh.JPG" to be renamed. However, I note that the English Wikipedia article "Pittsburg City-County Building" refers to the building by the name "Pittsburg City-County Building". Can you provide some evidence (e.g., a link to an official website) to show that the building is actually called the "County Office Building"? — Cheers, JackLee talk 07:39, 23 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re: OTRS Request

[edit]

Hi! There was a single ticket (#2006061810007652) from June 2006 giving permission for images from asergeev.com to be used under GFDL (and given when it was issued, these can use the "migration=relicense" parameter. Do you have any images in particular that this may apply to? And regarding the Cornell image you mentioned, the applied OTRS ticket is the correct one. I've gone ahead and cleaned it up a bit. If there's anything else I can help with, let me know. Huntster (t @ c) 10:42, 5 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed the syntax in the template to make migration possible. --MGA73 (talk) 06:53, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Thank you for uploading Image:Arts Quad and Goldwin Smith Hall.jpg, however the license that you have uploaded it under has been deprecated. Please could you select a new free license that describes the rights of the image correctly? If you are not able to do this, the image will be deleted in 7 days.

For more information on licenses that can be used on Wikimedia Commons, please see Commons:Licensing. If you have any questions, please ask at the village pump. Thank you for your patience and consideration. This is an automatic message by Nikbot.--Filnik 14:37, 5 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File:W&J_College_tobacco_silk.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

RfD

[edit]

Well, I work a lot of RfD a day, and always try to judge them with objectivity, honesty and good faith. In this process I admit there's room for errors, but frankly I see nothing copyrightable in a Justice's scales. Anyway you're free to resubmit it for deletion and I wouldn't take part in the new RfD. -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 11:51, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

DvoraBochman's Art work

[edit]

Being new to commons - I am not sure what you think is problematic with the works you nominated for deletion? They were not only painted/sculptured by Dvora but also modified and uploaded by her. The uploaded photographs are therefore duly licensed for use in wikipedia. Please point me to any policy stating otherwise - since she has voiced an interest in upload new versions of some of these images as well as some new pictures. Category discussion warning

Category:Pittsburgh_Steps has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Hi GrapedApe, thanks for your application to be an image reviewer. The application has been removed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. You can review all kind of image licenses on Commons. Please see Commons:License review and Commons:Flickr files if you haven't done so already. We also have a guide how to detect copyright violations. Backlogs include Flickr review, Picasa review, Panoramio review, and files from other sources. You can use one of the following scripts by adding one of the lines to your common.js:

importScript('User:ZooFari/licensereviewer.js'); // stable script for reviewing images from any kind of source OR
importScript('User:Rillke/LicenseReview.js'); // contains also user notification when review fails, auto blacklist-check and auto-thank you message for Flickr-reviews.

You can also add User reviewer or User trusted to your user page if you wish. Thank you for your contributions on Commons!--Morning Sunshine (talk) 02:10, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wanderlustering

[edit]

On Wanderlustering's page you told them "that these images were encyclopedic"[2] when saying that you had removed them. I think you meant to say unencyclopedic. I mention it because the editor has continued to upload altered images. I have asked them to stop editing images, but I did not know if you wanted to correct yourself. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

This message was added automatically by Nikbot, if you need some help about it please read the text above again and follow the links in it, if you still need help ask at the ? Commons:Help desk in any language you like to use. --Nikbot 03:41, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

deleted picture

[edit]

Hi GrapedApe, I saw too late that there was the deletion discussion about this picture. Could you please briefly grant me access to the picture, so I can check if it can be used in a non-English Wikipedia? From what I remember, it meets the requirements of the German Wikipedia, and then I'd like to talk to the experts there and check if we can safely upload it there and continue using it.
