User talk:Brett Cox
Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.Elisfkc (talk) 17:54, 12 April 2017 (UTC)

Could you explain to me what's going on with your recent edit to File:Korean acorn jellies.jpg? Originally I had Category:Seattle Korean Cultural Celebration Category:Korean desserts Category:Quercus. On 14 September 2007 Isageum changed Category:Korean desserts to Category:Tteok which I assume was an effort at greater specificity. On 7 August 2008 Cillas removed Category:Quercus, presumably as redundant to Category:Tteok. There have been miscellaneous other edits, including some disagreements, but most recently you removed Category:Tteok, which means there is no longer even any indication that this is a Korean dessert. Surely at least that much (that they are a Korean dessert) should be uncontroversial, no? And I personally still see some reason to take the word of the person who made them who asserted that they were acorn jellies, even if someone else thinks that's not what they look like. - Jmabel ! talk 23:03, 22 December 2018 (UTC)()
- @Jmabel: It doesn't look like tteok, so I removed the category. It seems like what's in the picture is dasik. They are definitely not acorn jellies (dotori-muk). --Brett Cox (talk) 00:56, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
- Can we at least agree to restore Category:Korean desserts? - Jmabel ! talk 01:00, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Go ahead. I added the Category:Dasik, which is in Category:Hangwa, which is again in Category:Desserts of Korea, so I don't think adding Category:Desserts of Korea would be is necessary though. --Brett Cox (talk) 01:02, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: The patterns of the food in File:Korean acorn jellies.jpg match with patterns of dasik in File:Hangeul Letters Exhibition 23.jpg, by the way. Dasik are moulded sweets made using a mould cold dasik-pan, so I'm pretty sure the food in the photo are dasik. Even texture-wise, they aren't tteok. There is no way they are Dotorimuk. --Brett Cox (talk) 01:06, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
- OK, that's fine. - Jmabel ! talk 01:38, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
