Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:36, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi Allan warren,
is there any problem with File:Peter Sellers Allan Warren.tif as you have re-tagged it as "dupe"? Though TIFF files are currently not displayed on Wikimedia pages (that may change soon), they are of value as they are not compressed, in contrast to jpg. --Túrelio (talk) 20:27, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

[edit]Hello. I've flipped your image File:HRH The Duke of Edinburgh Allan Warren.jpg back again. This time using the original file though, instead of the cropped version of the wider field image. Sorry about uploading another version, I realize now that that was inappropriate. I'm hoping you'll accept the newest flipped version because the image appears to be digitized in reverse. The facial features seem more recognizable in the flipped orientation, and the button hole and pocket on the jacket should be on the left side not on the right. Also, in your wider field photo, File:The Duke of Edinburgh (2).jpg, there is a clock in the background, which also appears to confirm that the switched orientation is correct. If you want to switch it back again, could you let me know on my talk page and I'll upload the flipped version as a separate file? Thanks, DrKiernan (talk) 21:18, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
Peters Sellers in Belgravia?
[edit]Hello Allan Warren, I've noticed your photo of Peter Sellers at home (File:Peter Sellers at home Allan Warren.jpg), thank you to share it on Commons. G'day!
[edit]Dear Allan, thank you for your extraordinary generosity! I love your photos, and have had such enjoyment looking through those you have uploaded. I particularly love the portraits in interiors: Noel Coward and Cole Lesley, Gracie Fields, Debbie Reynolds and the various dukes.
I was prompted, purely by his face, which has a very Ocker appearance, to look up the Duke of Manchester. Lo, I discovered that his brother, the succeeding Duke and who looks exactly like an Australian used-car salesman, has had a long and devious history of bigamy, assault, fraud and the on-selling of a hired car, not to mention the promulgation of conspiracy theories concerning the Royal Family..... they do hail from Victoria.... maybe they are descendants of Ned Kelly.....
Small fix needed- one of the Chomondely photos has a missing "h" in its filename.
Cheers!

Hi Mr Warren, could you add a date to this image, if possible? A year would be enough. As a side note, do you have images of R A Butler or Harold Macmillan which could be released under a free license? Thanks. Crisco 1492 (talk) 11:03, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
Mister Warren, it seems that the current version and the former version which you replaced are two completely different photos of the Duke that may have even a 10 difference with each other. Why don't you upload them both separately?--77.49.131.150 22:32, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
jack wild?
[edit]hello & many thanks for sharing your wonderful photo collection on wikimedia!
was just wondering if you had any photos of the late jack wild (actor; Oliver!, etc.) that you'd be willing to share here? i noticed that you've uploaded a lovely shot of mark lester (in-use on his wikip bio), & we have no picture at all for jack's bio, which is a shame. it occurred to me that you would most likely have had opportunities to photograph jack as well, so i thought i'd ask/mention that we needed one.
if you do happen to have a shot of him that you want to share, let me know when it's uploaded, & i'll add it to his bio?
in any case, thanks again for providing such really great material! it would be exceedingly hard to find pictures of these people that we could use on here (much less GOOD pictures) without your contributions.
regards & best wishes,

[edit]Hi, Allan. I noticed that the date from this image and this image is given as 1973, but for this image and this image it's 1974. They look like they're from the same shoot: do you know which year is correct so I can reconcile them?

Tools and statistics for Allan Warren uploads
[edit]Allan, I've spent a few days further categorising your images, and thought you might be interested in some tools and statistics.
You've uploaded 815 images to date. A total of 361 of those are being used on Wikipedia articles of all languages; in total 2,271 copies of your images are in use across all Wikipedia languages. There's obvious scope for much more image use as other language versions of Wikipedia catch on to the fact that the English Wikipedia has images available. And, indeed, there is still plenty of scope for reuse of the images on a range of as yet unvisited English Wikipedia pages.
The hold-on-to-your-hat part of the statistics is, pages on which your images now reside were viewed 9,538,810 times in the month of September 2012 alone. Your most viewed image is file:Sir_Roger_Moore_Allan_Warren.jpg, used on 42 pages, which was viewed 569,056 times. You can reckon on, easily, 150 million pairs of eyeballs on your images per annum on current reckoning; and many more than that as images percolate across the language versions.
As to tools, let me introduce you to:
- Category:Photographs by Allan Warren - you're probably familiar with, the most basic list of your uploads.
- User uploads, a rather pedestrian table of your images
- Gallery with various sort options
- Gallery tool - another gallery, slightly different user interface
- GLAMorous - Number of images used in each language Wikipedia, a list of pages using each image, and the number of page-views per image per month. Source of the statistics above. May take a good while to load the page. (Currently set to show September 2012 stats ... you can select other time periods for stats).
best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk) 02:07, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
From George Ho
[edit]I read your message, and thank you for contacting me. I could not figure out specifically what you meant. So to what file are you referring about attribution or something? --George Ho (talk) 13:32, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
- I read all of the messages, and gleaned that George Ho had, for some reason, suggested the use of the Attribution license rather than a combination of and GFDL currently being used (see 'Your uploaded photos', above). Allan responded by asking what the difference was between the licences. To be honest, I think there's little practical difference. All three licenses require re-use of the images to be attributed to Allan Warren, and, otherwise, place virtually no other limitations on use. In my opinion, Allan, stick to what you're doing now. (I make the presumption that you are aware of the terms of the license under which you're releasing your image. As near as damn it you are putting them in the public domain; not quite, but for all practical purposes.) --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:38, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, just wasn't sure why there were som many variations of them... will do and thanks again

[edit]Copyright status: File:Frank Dunlop Allan Warren.jpeg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Frank Dunlop Allan Warren.jpeg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Thanks for uploading File:Derek fowlds 2 Allan Warren.jpg.
Thank you. |

[edit]I added to the description of this image] that Bart is leaning against a mirror, to clarify what is being shown in the image. Feel free to modify the description if you wish to clarify further. -- 65.78.11.223 01:52, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
Great work
[edit]Hello! Thank you so much for your wonderful images. You were there with so many of my childhood heroes and with each one you captured something so essential of them. I was wondering if you had any images of Annabel's in Berkeley Square or any other of the great clubs of the 1960s and 70s, as my Wikipedia research has focused on them in recent months. Once again, thank you so much. No Swan So Fine (talk) 21:11, 8 November 2022 (UTC)
- Very kind of you, thank you. I'm sorry but I don't have any images of Annabelle's or the others tending at the time.
- best,
