Description

Hyphaene thebaica wikispecies Hyphaene thebaica

English: Doum Palm (Common name gingerbread tree or thebaica) is a type of palm tree with edible oval fruit, originally native to the Nile valley. It is a member of the palm family, Arecaceae. The northernmost habitat of the Doum Palm is in Evrona, about 20 km north of Eilat, Israel.
עברית: דום מצרי, או בשמו העממי דקל הדום, מין בסוג דום. הדום המצרי הוא דקל הצומח בר באפריקה הטרופית בסודאן ובמצרים. התפוצה הצפונית ביותר בעולם של עצים אלה הוא עברונה הנמצאת בדרום הערבה כעשרים קילומטר צפונית לאילת. שם הסוג בעברית לקוח מהשם העממי בארצות התפוצה בהודו ובאפריקה. דקל הדום הוא גם עץ נוי באזור אילת ובערבה. בימנו ירד מפלס מי התהום בערבה ואת הדקלים בשמורה עברונה משקים באמצאות טפטפות.
