[edit]DescriptionCamp Humphreys Panorama 1 of 2 - Fort Belvoir (17277444412).jpg |
Two panoramic photos of Camp Andrew Atkinson Humphreys in 1918. Two foot gauge railroad was used to construct the camp and then to train the engineers. Written on the photos is: "Engineer Truck Companies" "Numbers 443, 449, 456" "Camp A. A. Humphreys" "Accotnk, Virginia, March 25, 1918" "Clements Photo" It was named Camp A.A. Humphreys in honor of Civil War commander and former Chief of Engineers (1866-79), Major General Andrew A. Humphreys. Construction was done by African-American service battalions. I have not been able to find any information about these three Companies (443, 449, 456) on the Internet. Mack AC Bulldog 5 ton trucks. There are over 100 trucks in this photo. This truck was nicknamed "Bulldog" and the Bulldog logo was adopted by the Mack Brothers Company of Brooklyn, NY in 1922. Non military buildings included the YMCA, YWCA, Knights of Columbus, Jewish Welfare Board, Saint Martin’s Chapel, Exchange, Red Cross, and the Library Board. The Camp was renamed to Fort Belvoir in the 1930s. Part of Belvoir is called The United States Army Corps of Engineers Humphreys Engineer Center. I scanned each photo seven times and then merged the parts together with Photoshop Elements 7.
