English: Parapets — a wall-like barrier at the edge of a roof, terrace, balcony, or other structure.

Where extending above a roof, it may simply be the portion of an exterior wall that continues above the line of the roof surface, or may be a continuation of a vertical feature beneath the roof such as a fire wall or party wall. Parapets were originally used to defend buildings from military attack.

On parle aussi du parapet d’un pont. Il peut s'étendre au-dessus d'un toit, constituer la portion d'un mur extérieur qui se poursuit au-dessus de la ligne de la surface du toit ou être la continuation d'un élément fonctionnel vertical sous le toit comme un mur coupe-feu ou un mur mitoyen. Les parapets ont été initialement utilisés pour défendre les bâtiments contre une attaque militaire.
