Hello, FBQ!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

File:Ambrotypi.JPG

A user on German WP, de:Benutzer:Remirus, a collector of Daguerreotypes, thinks that File:Ambrotypi.JPG looks very much like a Daguerreotype.--Radh (talk) 07:46, 14 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Now I am registrated at Commons myself, and I have written a concerning note on the talk page of that file. Let us continue the talk there. --Remirus (talk) 13:31, 27 April 2010 (UTC) / re-edited --Remirus (talk) 10:57, 5 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, i havent been that busy here lately - im usually on Swedish wikipedia. No, this is defenetly an Ambrotype. The plate is an inverted glass plate, not one of silverplated cupper. Earlier a paper negative was listed as an ambrotype, so i upploaded this image so that the article would have an image that clearly shows the teknique. Best regards /--FBQ (talk) 01:06, 6 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Pay attention to licensing
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.

File:Öregrund.JPG seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file.

If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file discussion page.

العربية  Deutsch  English  español  français  日本語  മലയാളം  polski  português  slovenščina  svenska  Tiếng Việt  简体中文  繁體中文  +/−

The reason given by the user who added this tag is: you are not the author by scanning/photographing another photo. When did the original photographer "A. Skötsner" die? Why is this image public domain? Or did you you inherit the image from him? Please clarify the licensing.

Saibo (Δ) 03:11, 27 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Dont understad those licenses. Made a little look into it. A. Skötsner is the fotograhper of the image. Dont know his exact year of death. A. Skötsner was probably dead 1890, his widow Brita Skötsner born in Rättvik, Dalecarlia lives in Öregrund 1890. She is remarried in 1900 with photographer Per Elis Edhlundh.--FBQ (talk) 11:14, 27 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hallo FBQ, thank you very much for you reply and the further information! :-)
Do you know his year of birth? Or do you have information that A. Skötsner did not lived anymore in year 1940 or something? Do you know if and when the photo was first published? Or is it a family album photo? We need to find a reason mentioned in Commons:Licensing#Sweden why this photo is public domain. I want to help you with this. :-) Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 16:43, 27 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Its a regular 11x6,5 photograph on cartoon paper of the type used 1860-1920, i dated it to 1890:ies from the look of - gold printed photographers name on pretty thick paper. Also the white hull of the ship - ships in 1870- and 1880:ies usually had a dark hull but i will look into it, and try to date some buildings. Its from an old album of images - i dont know if it ever been published, i could have been, since some images of this sort where sold in bookshops at that time, and could have been used later in some publications. A. Skötsner should not have been alive 1940, his wife, born 1865, was widow allready 1890 according to "Svergies befolkning 1890" (DC record of Swedish sensus 1890).--FBQ (talk) 20:46, 27 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Okay if his wife was a "window" at latest 1890 that means he died before, right? That is more than enough. So there is no need for you to do further research. Of course it would be nice if you knew a more safe date - but just for documentary purposes. I have changed some information on the file page according to your comments here. Thank you! --Saibo (Δ) 22:01, 27 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
I have tried a bit and made: File:Öregrund-2.JPG --Saibo (Δ) 22:30, 27 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I know lot of my images are pretty crappy, not much of a photographer... Guess i should use a scanner instead, but i think it will wait. Right now i try to focus on writing articles on swedish wikipedia, perhaps later i will try and add more images here.--FBQ (talk) 22:45, 27 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yes, scanning is better than to make a photo of a photo. It will not improve much (since the old photos are often of not good quality themselves) but a bit. Have nice days! Bye --Saibo (Δ) 00:39, 28 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

It's not marked, there are two or three namnes to choose from an perhaps the person can be identified, but they all died more than 100 years ago.--FBQ (talk) 16:54, 26 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Why is a link to Commons:Essential information for further help even included? All that page says is: Information on the lifespan of the creator is also useful. In cases of art which is many centuries old, this is obviously less important than for, say, a 20th century photograph. I clearly stated that the photographer died in 1914, i also clearly allready stated that the picture wast taken in the 1890:ies, but that page still dont tell my what licence i'm suppose too use :-(--FBQ (talk) 12:29, 13 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
