Description

According to the World Health Organization, physical inactivity and lack of exercise are global problems affecting one in four adults. Personal trainers have been recognized to play a key role in effective, sustainable, and long-term behavioral change in consumers in the health and fitness industries. Given the uptake of digital technologies such as fitness and fitness coaching apps, a design science research project is underway to leverage rich data sources to develop a novel Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled decision support system that focuses on the personal trainer instead of the consumer. The system aims to allow personal trainers to receive data-driven feedback, augment their activities and improve the knowledge exchange with their clients. This paper describes the design science research framework, reports current findings regarding a prototype and its evaluation, and outlines future research directions.
