Wikipedia:Robot

in Wikipedia, die vrye ensiklopedie
For bot operators that want to run their bots, please see the appropriate section below.

Applications for robot status

[wysig bron]

Please realise that we, the Afrikaans speaking human editors of the Afrikaans Wikipedia, have limited resources, and really want to write a good, Free encyclopedia in Afrikaans. Time used to evaluate robot applications, robot edits, or any other aspect of robot life, takes away our time that could be spent on writing, editing, translation, public relations, etc. Therefore please make sure that you can clearly indicate the advantage your robot brings to the Afrikaans Wikipedia project. If you think we really want the most up to date interwiki links to empty date articles in other languages of Wikipedia, you are mistaken, and really need to re-evaluate things from our perspective.

Your robot should at least comply with these requirements:

  • a user page for your robot, explaining:
    • the robot's page should explain what the robot does - the purpose and usefulness of the robot for the Afrikaans Wikipedia project
    • the software used by the robot, including the version number or your policy for updating from the version control system
    • who is responsible for the robot
    • whether its activities are attended or not - please be as specific as possible
    • whether it is permanent or temporary. If temporary, mention the time that it will be operating in.
  • Mention your application in the talk page of this article.

Please realise that your application may take a very long time (some volunteers need to review your application, and interested volunteers might not be available/willing all the time). Please also realise that the local bureaucrats can only give bot status to robots who's applications have been reviewed by a locally trusted human. Please understand that local administrators are encouraged to block robots if any problem is suspected - there is no need to take it personally. Similarly, not all administrators might feel inclined to search for your preferred talk page through lots of redirects onto Wikipedia projects with user interfaces in languages that they don't understand. Human time is more precious than computer (robot) time.

Robots without a robot flag are allowed to edit, but only if their edits are infrequent (a few per hour). This is necessary to enable review of your activities before granting robot status, or might be required if the nature of your robot's work actually requires human review.

Global bots

[wysig bron]

The standard bot policy was updated to allow global bots, which are now technically possible. These are trusted bots that will be given bot access on every wiki that allows global bots (the local policy or request page must explicitly allow them, or they won't get access on this wiki). The current requirements for global bots are:

  • a global bot must only maintain interlanguage links or fix double-redirects;
  • a global bot must have already been active on several wikis, with long-term contributions demonstrating its trustworthiness.
  • Global bot policy is active for this wiki.

More info see the talk page.
