Super Smash Bros. (大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズ, Dairantō Smash Brothers) is a series of crossover fighting games released by Nintendo and directed by Masahiro Sakurai. The series debuted in the Nintendo 64 and has appeared in every Nintendo home console since, with Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS being the first to appear in a handheld console. The Super Smash Bros. series features iconic Nintendo characters brawling across stages based on several of their franchises, with Super Smash Bros. Brawl introducing third party characters and stages as well. The series also features items and collectables based on many Nintendo and third party franchises, such as Trophies and Stickers.

Several The Legend of Zelda characters, items, and stages have appeared across all the entries of the series.

Games

Super Smash Bros.

Main article: Super Smash Bros.

Super Smash Bros. was released for the Nintendo 64 in 1999. It introduced Link as a playable character, Hyrule Castle as a stage, and Heart Containers as recovery items.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Super Smash Bros. Melee was released for the GameCube in 2001. It introduced Young Link, Zelda/Sheik, and Ganondorf as playable characters alongside Link. The game also features the Great Bay and a Temple as stages. Super Smash Bros. Melee also introduced Trophies, with 30 of them based on The Legend of Zelda series, and the Bunny Hood as an item.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Super Smash Bros. Brawl was released for the Wii in 2008. It introduced Toon Link as a playable character, replacing Young Link. The game also introduced Final Smashes, powerful attacks that can be performed after destroying the Smash Ball, and Stickers, with 71 of them based on The Legend of Zelda series. Super Smash Bros. Brawl includes the Pirate Ship and the Bridge of Eldin as stages, with the Temple returning from Super Smash Bros. Melee, and 47 Trophies based on The Legend of Zelda series. The game also introduces Deku Nuts as items and Tingle as an Assist Trophy.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U were released in 2014. They introduced Sheik as a separate character, no longer being Zelda's transformation. The games include Skyloft, Gerudo Valley, and the Spirit Train as stages, with the Hyrule Castle, Temple, and Bridge of Eldin stages returning. The games introduced Cuccos, the Gust Bellows, the Beetle, a Fairy in a Bottle, and Bombchu as items, with Skull Kid, Midna, and Ghirahim as Assist Trophies. They also feature many enemies from The Legend of Zelda series in the Nintendo 3DS exclusive mode, Smash Run. The Wii U version features 49 Trophies based on The Legend of Zelda series, while the Nintendo 3DS version features 58.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is set to release on December 7, 2018. Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, Sheik and Toon Link return as playable fighters, with Young Link returning after 17 years from Super Smash Bros. Melee. The Hyrule Castle, Great Bay, Temple, Bridge of Eldin, Pirate Ship, Gerudo Valley, Spirit Train, and Skyloft stages all return in this installment. Every item from Super Smash Bros. history make a return. Midna and Ghirahim return as Assist Trophies.
