In Skyward Sword, Rock Octoroks are Octoroks that adapted from water to land and have the ability to spit rocks.[5] They sleep with rocks on their head as camouflage until it senses nearby prey and attack by spitting a rock. Link can deflect the rock back at them with a Shield to defeat them.

In Breath of the Wild, Rock Octoroks primarily live in Eldin Canyon and Eldin Mountains, but they can also be found in Gerudo Highlands. They inhale massive loads of air and then spit out an explosive fire rock at their target. Getting too close to one causes it to take cover and hide underground with the rock on its head as protection. Link can defeat them by placing a Remote Bomb in its path while it inhales air and detonating the Bomb after the Octorok swallows it.[6] If a Rock Octorok swallows a piece of Rusty Gear during the inhaling process, it will pause to crunch it in its mouth and, afterwards, shoot it back out as a clean counterpart.
After being cleaned, there is a 50% chance that the item will be shot out as its corresponding item in the Traveler's Gear archetype, a 35% chance that it will be of the Soldier's Gear, a 10% chance that it will be of the Knight's Gear, and a 5% chance that it will be of the Royal Gear.

Rock Octoroks reappear in Tears of the Kingdom, and are mostly unchanged from their Breath of the Wild incarnation. The rocks on their heads can now be destroyed with "crushing" Weapons or explosions, which causes them to emerge from the ground temporarily. After they burrow underground again, they will replace the rock. They can no longer polish Rusty Gear, but they now have the ability to repair Durability and add Weapon Bonuses to most Equipment.
When a Rock Octorok swallows a valid piece of Equipment, it will restore both the "base" and "bonus" Durability of the Equipment, as well as the Durability of any Equipment Fused to it. It will also apply a new Weapon Bonus to the base Equipment. If the Equipment had no Weapon Bonus before, it will receive a "tier 1" Weapon Bonus that is indicated with a blue or white icon. If it already had a "tier 1" or "tier 2" Weapon Bonus, which is indicated by a yellow icon, then it will receive a new "tier 2" Weapon Bonus. The exact Weapon Bonus applied is randomly chosen based on the tier of Weapon Bonus and type of Equipment receiving it. The Weapon Bonus is chosen when the Rock Octorok eats the Equipment, so the result can be changed by loading a save made before the Equipment was swallowed. After a Rock Octorok has repaired a piece of Equipment, it will not be able to do so again until after a Blood Moon occurs and the local area has been reloaded.
Certain rare or unique Equipment cannot receive Weapon Bonuses from Rock Octoroks, and they cannot be repaired by them normally, instead getting spit out by the Rock Octorok immediately after being sucked up. These Equipment can instead be repaired by Rock Octoroks while they are Fused to other Equipment, after which they can be taken to the Break-a-Part Shop in Tarrey Town to separate them.

Rock Octoroks appear as Enemies in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, and often drop Octorok Eyeballs or Octo Balloons upon defeat. Killing one also rewards the Warriors with a Octorok Trophy at the end of a Challenge or Scenario.
Rock Octoroks can be found as one of the main Enemies in Challenges such "Sidon vs. the Octoroks", "Cross the Hebra Mountains", and "Polishing His Technique", and are always found disguised as normal rocks.
