The Hyrule Castle Underground consists of the portion of Hyrule Castle that is located below its main structure. It previously hosted mining operations in the East Passage and West Passage, and the Lockup housed the prisoners of Hyrule Castle.

Princess Zelda is sent to the Hyrule Castle Underground's cells after narrowly escaping the Rift that grows from the Throne Room and envelopes the Castle. After the King of Hyrule and his attendants are lost to the Rift, they are replaced by suspicious imposters who plot to execute Zelda. In order to save Zelda and to repair the Rifts that are forming across Hyrule, the Fairy named Tri appears before her and grants her the Tri Rod. This Item allows Zelda to copy Objects and summon them as Echoes.

By cleverly summoning Echoes, Zelda is able to sneak through the Underground and reunite with Impa. Impa helps Zelda don a disguise and instructs her to pass through the Royal-Family Shortcut to find a trusted ally to the south. This begins the Main Quest "The Mysterious Rifts".
