The Ghost Ship is a recurring Dungeon in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2][name references needed]

The Wind Waker

Entrance

The Ghost Ship haunts seven islands of the Great Sea during the night. It appears at different locations depending on the current state of the moon. Only by obtaining the Ghost Ship Chart, hidden on Diamond Steppe Island,[3] Link can enter it.

The Ghost Ship appears at Crescent Moon Island during full moon,[4] Diamond Steppe Island when part of the right half of the moon is missing,[3] Bomb Island when the right half of the moon is missing,[5] Spectacle Island when the crescent moon faces up,[6] Five-Star Isles when the crescent moon faces down,[7] Star Belt Archipelago when the left half of the moon is missing,[8] and Greatfish Isle when part of the left half of the moon is missing.[9]

Themes and Navigation

The Ghost Ship is transparent with surrounding blue flames. It bears a tattered sail and flag, and, on its bow, is a carving of what appears to be a person praying. Whenever Link is in the same area as the Ghost Ship, the sky fills with dark clouds and thunders, and a haunting melody starts to play. The interior has broken wooden beams and, on both sides of the floor, are four skulls lined in a row. The cracked left side of the ceiling shows what appear to be spirits floating by. There is also a small beam of light on the right side, containing a lone flower. In The Wind Waker HD, the interior floor also bears a ghastly haze.

Once inside the Ghost Ship, Link must defeat two Poes and a Wizzrobe, which is able to summon ReDeads and Stalfos. After defeating all the enemies, Link will be able to climb up a ladder leading to a Treasure Chest which contains a Triforce Chart in The Wind Waker or a Triforce Shard in The Wind Waker HD. After collecting the contents of the Treasure Chest, a demonic scream sounds throughout the Ghost Ship. Link then awakens aboard the King of Red Lions, with the Ghost Ship disappearing forever.

Phantom Hourglass

Entrance to the Ghost Ship

Prior to the events of Phantom Hourglass, the Ghost Ship had built up a reputation as a cursed ship that nobody has ever returned from.[10]

While Link and the Pirates are on the lookout for the Ghost Ship in their adventures, it suddenly appears within a ghostly fog. Tetra boards it and shrieks once she is out of sight of the others, prompting Link to follow her in an attempt to rescue her. However, he instead falls into the ocean, and eventually comes to in the World of the Ocean King.[11] Link then searches for a ship captain who will give him a ship to use to chase the Ghost Ship and rescue Tetra. He comes across Linebeck, who agrees to help him find the Ghost Ship, believing he will find great treasures there.

After Link has obtained a Cannon for the SS Linebeck, the Ghost Ship will soon reappear. Link attempts to follow it, but soon becomes lost in the fog. After traveling to Molida Island to find the path he must take, he is able to get away from it, although the fog does not dissipate until Link rescues Tetra from the ship.[clarification needed]

After Link has freed Leaf and Neri as well as regaining Ciela's memory, he once more sails into the fog. This time, he locates and boards the Ghost Ship.

Themes and Navigation

Once inside the Ghost Ship, Link meets one of the four Cubus Sisters, who must be rescued from the different floors of the ship and reunited. The sisters then reveal themselves to be demons, and challenge Link to a game of Dead Man's Volley. Once Link defeats them, he is given the Ghost Key to open the door leading to Tetra's whereabouts.

When Tetra is rescued, Oshus reveals himself to be the Ocean King, and explains that the Ghost Ship is actually a way for Bellum to get victims. He spread rumors of a great treasure within the ship to lure people there.

After Bellum is defeated within the Temple of the Ocean King, he takes Tetra again and takes control of the Ghost Ship. Here, Link sails alongside it, launching Bombs at Bellum's eyes. Eventually, it sinks, and the final boss battle takes place on its remains. After the game's credits, Link and Tetra awaken on the mysteriously repaired Ghost Ship. They go back onto their own ship, and the Ghost Ship soon disappears without a trace.

Trivia

  • In the small room containing the Treasure Chest in The Wind Waker, there is an engraved face on the wall that seems to have a wide, eerie grin from afar. However, when Link approaches it, the face quickly changes to that of an expressionless, normal face. This was removed in The Wind Waker HD.
  • The scream that is heard when obtaining opening the Treasure Chest is actually a sped-up version of an unused audio clip of Jabun screaming.[12]
  • At some point, the Ghost Ship was encountered and photographed by Lenzo.[13]
