That’s normal now. Employers don’t reward loyalty and pensions no longer exist. The only way to get a decent raise is by moving to another company.

So right you are, but I learned that was the way of the employer about 3-4 years before my back gave way on me, and that was in 2006...

or is this a trap the younger workers have fallen for and they don't yet realize that as they age , they won't move up , and there is a younger / better / ever growing workforce just waiting to replace them ?

That's why I always had long time employees who care... I always rewarded loyalty and good work.
I can't imagine starting a career in this work environment. Nobody seems to care anymore. I grew up with the mindset of "do it right the first time", but now it seems that no one from the top management to the person sweeping the floors really care. I can't work that way. I'm glad I'll be done in 64 more days.

Bingo. You have to keep moving on and look out for yourself because when the economy or the employers business slows they think nothing of cutting you loose.

Protean career paths are alot more common now. I generally spend 2-4 years with a company before moving on. It’s the best way I’ve found to get raises to keep up with inflation. Modern employers understand. I haven’t had any issues.

I think you’re correct in your methodology for moving up and I’ll an explanation as to why. Modern employers don’t value experience themselves because they’ve never seen the value of it themselves. They came by their positions in the corporate world the same way everyone has the last 30 years or so…. They were hired on the strength of their formal education with almost zero regard for actual working knowledge and experience in the way things work at the lower levels of their industry.

This all started when the federal government got into backing student loans decided that EVERYONE had some intrinsic right to a college education. What we ended up with was a massive surplus of chiefs and hardly any Indians. Of course all these new chiefs entered the work force with insane debt and a sense of entitlement to a well paying management position. The reality is the number of management positions doesn’t fit the number of new managers emerging from the college campuses.

Good luck today finding bean counters who understand how the beans are actually grown. When you don’t have a solid understanding of the processes at the lower levels, there’s a tendency to make poor decisions from the top.

Well since many of these players will never actually graduate why would wherever they end up working care about what they did or didn't do in college?
