of PFP money. My question is do you want him to go all-out to win the auctions for the High School Talent or would you rather he focus on winning the Free-Agency Portal auctions? He doesn't have the funds at his disposal to win both.

Using money to gain the best HS talent is more in line with his philosophy of developing talent as opposed to hiring trained mercenaries.

He needs to do something different. You can't have a developmental staff and players at the same time. We have proof that is not working.

If you are going to develop talent, you have to have coaches that develop talent. Our DC has never coached a position in his entire life. How well do you think he really coaches?

The more you lose games, the more you will have to spend just to keep your starters. If he keeps losing, he won't have the option of not using the portal.

HS recruits for sure. I just think he needs to be more vocal re: need for NIL funds. The problems with our current recruiting class stem from NIL. I understand he IS utilizing it with the current roster but wish he’d be more direct about the needs to raise funds to bring the most talented players here.

First priority needs to be having experienced and proven position/assistant coaches. Then you have to get the high $ high school recruits. Grab 5-6 transfers a year. If it can work for a lot of other elite programs it can work for us. I personally don’t think that’s possible to do without tampering, and I think Dabo will retire before he does that

It is called roster management. I want Dabo to use all the resources available to him to identify the best talent in HS and portal, and compete as best as we can to build the best roster possible. We found money to build some of the best facilities in the country, and we found money to establish one of the highest coaching payrolls in the country. He needs to work with his AD and the BOT to build a plan to attract and retain the best, and ask for the resources necessary to do that. Same with building out his coaching staff.
I'm not saying simply go after the guys who want to get the biggest bucks and try and win a bidding war. I think there is a level of solid athletes, who will fit the culture, who can be had with a reasonable offer. NIL is not a bag of money paid in a dark alley. It is the government stepping in and saying players have rights to be paid for their name, image and likeness since they contribute significantly to the bottom lines of the institutions they play for. It is a personal rights sanction that is now law, and part of the college football fabric, and the way we have to deal with players moving forward, whether we like it or not.
This is the new reality and to ignore it, simply because you don't like it, is a dereliction of duty, particularly for the amount of money a coach is drawing these days.

Both but mainly high school. The good thing about the portal though is we can get kids that have had other coaching, which is usually better than our coaching right?

of PFP money. My question is do you want him to go all-out to win the auctions for the High School Talent or would you rather he focus on winning the Free-Agency Portal auctions? He doesn't have the funds at his disposal to win both.
Just as 100% of business owners and 100% of college coaches (less military academies), Dabo can put on his big boy pants and allocate the best use of resources -- whether that be high school recruits or college transfers, that's his call as CEO.

we can do both. money isn't the issue.
IF you refuse to do the portal...you MUST recruit at an elite level in the HS ranks if you want to compete with your peers (bama, uga, OSU, etc..). We do neither at this time.
Josh Pate had it correct. Pick your legal poison. Can't go back to go forward.

If its an all or nothing, I'd prefer HS.
Realistically if it was 90% HS and 10% TP I'd be good with that as long as the TP players arent on their last year in critical positions (QB, MLB, LT, DE). I really don't want a 1-n-done

The reality is it isn't all or nothing for most good programs. It is a balance of both.

glaring holes in our roster that pop up due to missed evaluations or early departures...that's all...I don't want us to turn into Colorado of FSU, but I would like to see us get back to UGA and OSU territory again and I don't see a path there until we adapt

He needs to take some money and hire better coaches. Portal/recruiting/NIL money usage are all secondary concerns. Continue to recruit how Clemson Recruits, maybe make a few changes on how we offer kids, then back fill with portal guys. Clemson does not need to get into bidding wars trying to build a roster full of mercenaries, whether from the portal or high school.

I think a lot of it is coaching. Good coaches get good players. Bad or mediocre coaches, not so much. The best coaches get the best players or develop them into the best players. Dabo said the fun is in the winning. Well, we aren’t winning the players with some of the coaches we have now. Players look to further their business by going pro after college. The coaches not getting players in the pro need to go. You don’t get top talent like that. It’s like taking a job somewhere and they are closing up shop in 4 years. Hire good coaches, play exciting football and keep upgrading players. Kids know!!!!

Does anyone remember that one of the basic tenets of Moneyball was that the talent assessment of young professionals was far more accurate and efficient than trying to accurately assess high school talent before they faced professional competition.
Also, I don't agree that we can't do both. Spend to attract the best high school talent, but save some to bring in a few transfers for the spots when the high school talent doesn't pan out.

High school talent. But it has to be a mix of that and retention. You also may have to go to the portal fill a spot.
