Merging items

[edit]

Hallo Jgui,
When you merge items, you may want to use the merge.js gadget from help page about merging. It helps with merging, gives the option to always keep the lower number (which is older, so preferable in most cases) and removes the need to file a request on Wikidata:Requests for deletions.

French descriptions for rowers

[edit]

Hey Jgui, I see that you are adding a couple of French descriptions to items about rowing persons. I am interested to add them much more systematically, but unfortunately my French isn’t enough to do so. If I were to provide a list of the most important ~25 English descriptions for rowers, would you be willing to provide French translations (male and female form)? I would just add a table here on this page, you could add the French translations, and I would set up a batch to add the French descriptions whereever they are appropriate; this would probably affect a couple of thousand items. Thanks, MisterSynergy (talk) 13:09, 4 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@MisterSynergy: Okay, just add the table here. I will try to complete it with French translations. Just note I prefer translating the English word "rower" using French one "rameur" but "avironneur" may be more precise even if it does not sound really idiomatic to me. Check Q13382576. Jgui (talk) 14:15, 4 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yes, that distinction of "rameur" and "avironneur" in French. Actually, what’s the difference? Is it like "rower" and "oarsman"?
The table is provided below. If some fields are difficult, you can just leave them open. The table is ordered descending by number of rowing biographies we have at the moment (via this query). Thanks, —MisterSynergy (talk) 14:45, 4 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@MisterSynergy: I've searched the difference between "rower" and "oarsman", but seriously I don't get it. In French, "rameur" may be used for a person navigating in a "barque" (Q1092993) but it often refers a person who practices rowing as a sport. Even the French rowing federation calls "rameurs" the rowing practitioners.
For German Democratic Republic (Q16957), is something like "East German" should not be used in English to make a difference with the current unified country of Germany (Q183) ? Is United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (Q174193) really used for nationality in Wikidata ?
The table has been completed ! Jgui (talk) 15:44, 4 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot. To my knowledge (not a native English speaker either), “oarsman” is more traditional and also more often used for non-sports rowing, while “rower” is apparently a bit more inclusive for some reason. For sports rowers, we almost always use “rower”. I just figured out a way to list French descriptions used for items about rowers, see here. Clearly “rameur/rameuse” is dominating already now over “avironneur/avironneuse”. If someone comes up with a really convincing argument for the latter, we can simply switch over in future.
Later this day I will set up a batch edit session that adds those descriptions to all items which (1) are about rowing persons, (2) do not yet have a French description, (3) have only one country of citizenship (P27) claim, (4) have only one occupation (P106) claim with value either rower (Q13382576) or coxswain (Q1690874). This should already increase the number of French descriptions by some thousands, starting from ~2k right now (there are about 11.6k rower items in Wikidata).
Regarding former East Germany and former British state: given the way descriptions are used here, it does not really matter. Particularly East Germans and West Germans from former times have always been referred to as "Germans", thus it is perfectly fine to just call them "German rowers" without being formally incorrect. —MisterSynergy (talk) 16:04, 4 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The batch has now finished. We got 7769 new descriptions, so that ~9800 out of 11600 rowing persons now have a description in French. Thanks again, —MisterSynergy (talk) 06:29, 5 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@MisterSynergy: Great ! Jgui (talk) 09:38, 5 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
