This will be somewhat useful for water bottles. We want units to be accessible for all for those that don't use metric units, but we will also have to make accessibility for people that don't use non-metric units. To prevent too much accessibility, this one can be used as a qualifier, but not in the main or reference fields. Also, this could be used for certain properties when using it during inside statements, including "volume as quantity", "length", "width", "height", "area", and "mass". However, this cannot be used inside statements during the property "storage capacity". The US standard units can be used, but not for metric units. As described in mathsisfun.com and nist.gov, those will be considered metric units and will be considered to be allowed:
- Liquids: "fluid ounce", "cup", "pint", "quart", "gallon" (Source: source)
- Mass (Weight): "ounce", "pound", "ton" (Source: source)
- Length: "inches", "feet", "yard", "mile" (Source: source)
- Temperature: "degree", "Fahrenheit", "Celsius", "Kelvin" (Sources: source 1 | source 2)

To prevent too much accessibility for a certain group and too little accessibility for the other, I'd like to say I would be good at suggesting it. Solaris5296 (talk) 15:46, 15 January 2024 (UTC)
The link for what units are unacceptable for this property: [1]. However, Celsius and Kelvin would be acceptable at this property. Solaris5296 (talk) 15:50, 15 January 2024 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]- Oppose No valid examples were provided. In addition unit-conversion is not something that need to be stored in the data and can be done on demand. ChristianKl ❪✉❫ 13:10, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
I am now unwilling an administrator or a property creator to create this property, due to the fact that the property is based on quantity. In addition, I will have to say user experiences may be totally unsatisfied with this property. In addition, I had withdrawn the first two I did suggest on Wikidata, "Water bottle volume" and "Is it metric?". But now I'm suggesting this property and the property "PhoneScoop phone ID" to be created, but I'm unwilling an administrator or a property creator to create such a property like that. I will like to say that this property will be unlikely to be created on the behalf of this property proposal. I'd like to say that if people were satisfied with this property proposal because it makes people that don't use metric units and used the US Standard units instead be accessible having this, but unfortunately, user experiences are generally unfavorable. Much like I said, I will say to have a Weak oppose, but not a strong opposition or whatsever. However, despite the opposition not being strong, I would not be likely to support this property proposal. I would have to withdraw this property proposal whenever if user experiences gets worse.Opinion deprecated. Solaris5296 (talk) 14:48, 16 January 2024 (UTC)- @Solaris5296: Hi - I've set the status here to "Withdrawn" based on the above comment. In general on this topic, we already have unit conversion built in to Wikidata - the "psn:" prefix in WDQS provides values in standard units, and then you can convert from that to whatever you prefer by multiplying appropriately. There may be other approaches to doing this also. But generally special properties relating to units should no longer be needed here. ArthurPSmith (talk) 21:44, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
- I interpret the proposal as wanting to have readouts in a preferred unit of choice. As Arthur already mentioned, this is supported for SPARQL lists (you can ask for one on WD:RAQ), but it isn't supported in the Wikibase UI, but it seems someone wrote a javascript gadget to convert between units in the UI: User:Bamyers99/UnitsConverter.js . You can contact User:Bamyers99 if you want to have fluid ounces added.
- Also I'm not sure individual bottle designs are notable. The english wikipedia has a paragraph about the different designs of the Coca-Cola bottle, but individual designs were apparently too high granularity to merit their own article. Now Wikidata can decide on which granularity they want, it doesn't have to match what wikipedia uses, but when in doubt ask for the opinion of the community. - @Solaris5296: Re: Adding fluid units to UnitsConverter gadget. I can add the conversion from millilitres to US fluid oz. The only issue is that per en:Fluid ounce the United States has two conversions. I could add one or the other or both, but I think both would be confusing to a user. Or I could split the difference and use 29.786764781 mL. --Bamyers99 (talk) 17:04, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
- Neutral Withdrawn looks unnecessary. In terms, I should say I will be a bit helpful for liquid articles, but not significantly. There will be constraints for this property. Solaris5296 (talk) 23:45, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose on the grounds that this is not a well-formed proposal. Like Christian says, we need examples of the proposed use (look at other property proposals for examples) and we need an explanation of what this property would serve that needs to be done by a property as opposed to other methods.
