    Also co-founder

    [edit]

I've added "or co-founder," if this is problematic, please remove. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 14:31, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Someone who founded a place -- i.e. a state or city -- should be applicable, too. Yet we term them "geographical features" and not "organizations." So I've tweaked the description a little. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 21:00, 8 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Human instead of person

    [edit]

The constraints must be updated, person (Q215627) states it is not to be used for instance of (P31). Ahoerstemeier (talk) 15:56, 19 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Organisations, Countries

    [edit]

Looking at the constraint violations for this property, I'm seeing lots of instances where a country or organisation is listed as the founder, e.g.

Do we want to change the constraints of this property or create a new one to handle these values? Thryduulf (talk: local | en.wp | en.wikt) 10:53, 7 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    Yes, I'd say any agent (Q24229398) should be allowed. -- JakobVoss (talk) 09:07, 6 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that the allowed values should be expanded to more than just persons. Any agent seems a sensible suggestion as this would be a catch-all for the entities that are often founders. If that is not agreeable, then perhaps a founding member property is necessary.Sic19 (talk) 17:31, 24 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    Multiple foundations

    [edit]

What do you do with organisations that have been re-founded? e.g. w:Magdalene College, Cambridge

Slight label change to encourage correct use of this property

    [edit]

I have changed the label (again) from 'founder' to 'founded by', in order to avoid confusion and improve human-readability and correct use. I've seen too many wrong applications of this property where a human (Q5) is said to be founded by (P112) an organization. Spinster 💬 11:09, 8 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Founder of an ideology

    [edit]

I've added ideology (Q7257) as a class that could be founded by someone. This includes religions as a subclass of that, but also things like political ideologies.--Pharos (talk) 17:23, 22 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    value type constraint

    [edit]

Organization can be founded by another organization, also company (subsidiary) can be founded by company , not only limited to government and human. Matthew hk (talk) 21:23, 24 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Derived Statement

    [edit]

This property makes a derived statement "Founder of" to show up with the gadget enabled. However, there is no "Founder of" property it just says to use this property "Founded by" which becomes confusing. Should something be changed to fix this, or am I missing another property? Pullen255 (talk) 14:04, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Pullen255: We do not need the inverse since the things founded by somebody can easily be queried with
    select ?what where { ?what wdt:P112 wd:Q8743. }

    Try it!

Label in French is not gender neutral

    [edit]

The label in French "fondateur" is not gender neutral. It use the male form as a generic form, which is not a very good practice. I propose some solutions :

    • the inclusive form : "fondateur.ice"
    • the male and female form : "fondateur ou fondatrice"
    • the verbal form "fondé.e par"

The inclusive form is great because it includes male, female and non-binary people. But some people don't like the inclusive form. (many debates in France around that question). The male and female form is clear but exclude non binary and intersex people. The verbal form seems to be a good solution.

    What do you think? PAC2 (talk) 20:59, 9 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I think I would favour "créateur·ice" "or créé·e par" which is the more modern form with a "point médian". I agree with the fact that using masculine form is far from neutral and we should try to fix this in languages that use gendered forms.
One remark : the verbal form in effect excluding the gender of the creator seems the best solution to avoid endless debates Nattes à chat (talk) Nattes à chat (talk) 09:53, 10 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@PAC2, Nattes à chat: not a good idea, see my comment on Property talk:P170. Cheers, VIGNERON (talk) 11:56, 11 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Gender neutral French label

    [edit]

Following this request for comments, the French label now includes the male and the female form. PAC2 (talk) 04:25, 15 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Founder of games and other activities?

    [edit]

I noticed that type of sport is part of the domain of this property, but not game or its subclasses. I think that this property should be able to be used for founders of games if it is also being used for founders of sports. Is there a reason for the way it is now, or were games just mistakenly left out of the domain? Marquaad34 (talk) 09:37, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I went ahead and added game to the domain. Let me know if this causes any issues. Marquaad34 (talk) 09:10, 1 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
