Collecting the fruit[edit]

Tropical Wilds[edit]

Scaly Custard
Location of the Scaly Custard in the Tropical Wilds.

The Scaly Custard in the Tropical Wilds is on a plateau in the middle of the northern half of the area. This plateau requires the use of seesaw blocks to get on top of it. Have at least one leader next to the seesaw block next to the beach, and another leader near the other seesaw block on the plateau. Weigh the beachside seesaw block down and walk onto it with as few Pikmin as possible; you may want to throw them up first. Get the other leader to throw Yellow Pikmin onto the Bouncy Mushroom so they land on the seesaw block on the plateau, causing the beachside seesaw block to rise. Switch to the other leader and walk across the plateau – the Scaly Custard should be easily accessible.

An easier way to get the fruit is to go next to the Burgeoning Spiderwort, and throw Pikmin onto the plateau from there.

Garden of Hope[edit]

Scaly Custard
Location of the Scaly Custard in the Garden of Hope.

The Scaly Custard in the Garden of Hope is on the small island right before the Quaggled Mireclops' arena. After discovering Blue Pikmin and building the pot bridge, throw two leaders onto it along with some Rock Pikmin. Proceed to throw the other leader and the Rock Pikmin to the other side. A Peckish Aristocrab will be hiding in the tin can. Defeat it, and it will drop the Scaly Custard. Do note that you will have to construct the blue bridge to carry the fruit back to the Drake, unless Winged Pikmin are used.

Collecting the treasure[edit]

Engulfed Castle[edit]

There is a Scaly Custard hanging from a cobweb on the southeastern corner of the central room in sublevel 3 of the Engulfed Castle. To collect this treasure, you must approach it from the raised ledge to the east and throw 10 Pikmin at it.

Primordial Thicket[edit]

There is a Scaly Custard trapped by sticky mold at the southernmost point of the overworld. To collect this treasure, you must clear out the mushrooms by throwing Pikmin at the platform. After they destroy the mushrooms, they will begin carrying the treasure, so throw at least 10.

Notes

Brittany's notes

US version US version
Huh. Looks like a reptile doing its best impression of pudding. Doesn't seem very fruit-like at all: not much juice, not sweet, high fat content... Tasty, I guess, in an odd way. I just hope it wasn't a poisonous reptile...
European version European version
Strange. It looks like a cross between a reptile and a pudding, and it doesn't seem very fruit-like: little juice, not at all sweet, and with a high fat content. Tasty, I suppose, in an odd way. Alph had a reaction to certain toxins in it... maybe that's its reptile side showing?

Schnauz's notes[edit]

It's a food...and yet it resembles some kind of scaly beast? Let's agree that the initial impression is not a good one! And yet...inside awaits a rich, creamy culinary delight! Oh, you Scaly Custard, you. Many have judged you harshly, and for that, I'm truly sorry.

Olimar's notes[edit]

The hard, scaly shell that covers this fruit gets softer and darker as it ripens, so determining the optimal time to peel and eat it can be difficult. It's as if the fruit is actively trying to sabotage your enjoyment of it. I've never known produce to be so sneaky.

Louie's notes[edit]

Mmm! Tastes rich and satisfying. So buttery you could almost confuse it with the real thing. Almost.

Naming[edit]

The fruit is called "Scaly Custard" because its outer shell resembles a reptile's skin, which is lined with scales, and the interior is actually quite smooth, like pudding or custard.

The Japanese name, ワニノフグリ? literally translates to "Crocodile Scrotum". The reason for this is that the etymology for the word "avocado" has one origin from the Nahuatl word āhuacatl, and this word would sometimes be used as "testicle"; this ties in the relation between the fruit's wrinkly exterior and the body part.[1] As stated before, the appearance resembles that of a reptile, so the name "Crocodile" is apt. In Eastern China, it's called "è lí", which means "alligator pear", and one of the earliest English uses of the word uses it as a corruption of "alligator pear".

Trivia[edit]

  • Along with the Heroine's Tear, this is one of the fruits that Alph is allergic to. In the real world, some people can get an allergic reaction to avocados.
