Winged Pikmin (羽ピクミン, Wing Pikmin) is Olimar's up special move in Super Smash Bros. 4 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Overview[edit]

When used, a pair of Winged Pikmin appear and begin to carry Olimar upwards. Their direction can be adjusted mid-flight. Additionally, Olimar will carry any Pikmin he has with him, allowing them to recover as well. However, the speed (and therefore, the distance traveled) of the move is lessened by each additional Pikmin that Olimar carries. If necessary, Olimar can throw his Pikmin away before using this move in order to make a safer recovery. This move's mechanics work inversely to Olimar's previous up special, which worked more effectively when more Pikmin are present. Additionally, with each consecutive use, the Winged Pikmin will grow tired and the distance they can carry Olimar, along with the speed and maneuverability of the move, decreases. The move can recover from this by letting it cool down between uses. Olimar can attack out of the move with any aerial attack at the cost of being released by the Winged Pikmin, ending his ascent prematurely and becoming helpless.

Customization[edit]

Special Move customization was added in Super Smash Bros. 4. These are the variations:

1. Winged Pikmin 2. Winged Pikmin Jump 3. Mighty Winged Pikmin
Winged Pikmin
Winged Pikmin Jump
Mighty Winged Pikmin
"Summon Winged Pikmin to fly you around. Less effective if you have more Pikmin." "Winged Pikmin pull you straight up very quickly, pushing opponents aside." "You can fly just as far with Pikmin in tow as without, but you can't fly as far to begin with."
  1. Winged Pikmin: Default.
  2. Winged Pikmin Jump: Quickly travel upwards, adding increased vertical recovery. However, Olimar immediately falls into his helpless state. The amount of vertical distance recovered lessens with each consecutive use. This distance recovers by letting the move cool down. Has a push effect on any nearby opponents upon startup.
  3. Mighty Winged Pikmin: This move always travels a set distance, regardless of the amount of Pikmin Olimar is carrying. It also recovers faster from its weakened state.

NTSC These pink Pikmin have big, blue eyes and nice wings to help them fly. In Smash Bros., they show up to carry Olimar and friends through the air. However, how high and far they can fly is affected by how many friends they have to carry. More Pikmin will weigh them down.

PAL This particular type of Pikmin has a pink body, blue eyes and...wings? Yep, they can fly, and in this game, they can even give Olimar a lift. The only thing is they'll get tired very easily, especially if they're carrying lots of other Pikmin at the same time. Go easy on them, OK?

Origin[edit]

Winged Pikmin at work.

In Pikmin 3, Winged Pikmin are capable of carrying objects above the ground. This allows them to bypass drop-downs, rivers, and other obstacles that grounded Pikmin cannot traverse, but can also lead them into traps set up by Arachnodes. As with other Pikmin types, more Winged Pikmin are required to carry heavier objects, and adding more to the minimum amount will allow the object to be carried faster. Notably, Olimar has to be carried by five Pikmin when escaping from the Mysterious Life-Form near the end of Pikmin 3, of which all can be Winged Pikmin if the player so chooses. However, the Pikmin weren't being commanded by Olimar himself as he was unconscious at the time, instead being guided by Brittany.

While it is in line with the origin for Olimar to be carried slower if he has to carry more Pikmin along, if this move were to occur in the original game the two Winged Pikmin would only be able to lift Olimar and one other Pikmin, requiring one more Winged Pikmin for each carried Pikmin (except for Purples, which weigh ten times as much).

In Hey! Pikmin, which was released a few years after Smash 4, Winged Pikmin can carry Olimar into the air over chasms, similar to this move.
