Haaland nominated for honorary award

BIOGRAPHY
Jan I. Haaland received his Dr.Oecon. degree from NHH Norwegian School of Economics in 1984. He became associate professor at NHH in 1985, and full professor in 1994. He was research director at the Centre for International Economics and Shipping (SIØS) at NHH in the mid-1990s, and Head of the Department of Economics 1999-2001. For the period 2001-05 he was a member of the Board of NHH.
Professor Haaland was Rector at NHH for two consecutive 4-year periods, from 2005 to 2013. In 2015-17 he served as Dean of master programmes and since 2015 he has been CEMS Academic Director at NHH. Since 2021 he has been Academic Director for the MSc in Economics and Business Administration at NHH.
Haaland’s main research areas are international trade, trade policy and global and regional economic integration. He has been research fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) in London since 1992, and he was a visiting academic at the University of Oxford in 2013-14 as well as in the spring term of 2019. He has participated in numerous international research collaborations and has published in journals like Journal of International Economics, Scandinavian Journal of Economics and Review of International Economics, as well as a number of international books.
Over the years, professor Haaland has held many positions in national and international networks. He was President of the Norwegian Association of Higher Education Institutions (now called Universities Norway, UHR) in the period 2009-13, and in the same period he was the Norwegian member of the Council of the European University Association (EUA). He was also a board member of the Nordic University Cooperation (NUS) in that period.
Professor Haaland was a member of the board of NOKUT (the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education), between 2015 and 2022, serving as deputy chair of the board for several years. He was chair of the Strategic Unit for Business Schools in Universities Norway (UHR-Economics and Administration) from 2018 until July 2022. Haaland was a member of the Strategic Board of CEMS – the Global Alliance in Management Education – between 2005 and 2013, and is currently member of the Academic Committee of CEMS.
Professor Haaland has participated in EQUIS Peer Review Teams on a regular basis since 2007; for the last thirteen years or so as chair of PRTs. He has been an EQUIS Advisor since 2016.

Free trade agreements do not always ensure free trade
The changes in the UK’s trading relationship with the EU are likely to have widespread effects, many of which are yet to be understood in full. This column (at voxeu.org) introduces the issue of compliance with rules of origin requirements within free trade agreements.
