1 λόγοι Αμως οἳ ἐγένοντο ἐν νακκαριμ ἐκ Θεκουε οὓς εἶδεν ὑπὲρ Ιερουσαλημ ἐν ἡμέραις Οζιου βασιλέως Ιουδα καὶ ἐν ἡμέραις Ιεροβοαμ τοῦ Ιωας βασιλέως Ισραηλ πρὸ δύο ἐτῶν τοῦ σεισμοῦ 2 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος ἐκ Σιων ἐφθέγξατο καὶ ἐξ Ιερουσαλημ ἔδωκεν φωνὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπένθησαν αἱ νομαὶ τῶν ποιμένων καὶ ἐξηράνθη ἡ κορυφὴ τοῦ Καρμήλου 1 Here tells Amos, one of the shepherd folk at Thecue, what visions he had con-cerning Israel. In Juda, Ozias was then reigning, in Israel, Jeroboam son of Joas, and it was two years before the earthquake. 2 Loud as roaring of lion, said he, the Lord will speak in thunder from his citadel at Jerusalem; forlorn they lie, yonder pastures the shepherds loved once, the heights of Carmel all shrivelled away. 1 Verba Amos, qui fuit in pastoribus de Thecue, quæ vidit super Israël in diebus Oziæ, regis Juda, et in diebus Jeroboam, filii Joas, regis Israël, ante duos annos terræmotus. 2 Et dixit:

Dominus de Sion rugiet,
et de Jerusalem dabit vocem suam;
et luxerunt speciosa pastorum,
et exsiccatus est vertex Carmeli.
3 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος ἐπὶ ταῖς τρισὶν ἀσεβείαις Δαμασκοῦ καὶ ἐπὶ ταῖς τέσσαρσιν οὐκ ἀποστραφήσομαι αὐτόν ἀν{Q'} ὧν ἔπριζον πρίοσιν σιδηροῖς τὰς ἐν γαστρὶ ἐχούσας τῶν ἐν Γαλααδ 4 καὶ ἐξαποστελῶ πῦρ εἰς τὸν οἶκον Αζαηλ καὶ καταφάγεται θεμέλια υἱοῦ Αδερ 5 καὶ συντρίψω μοχλοὺς Δαμασκοῦ καὶ ἐξολεθρεύσω κατοικοῦντας ἐκ πεδίου Ων καὶ κατακόψω φυλὴν ἐξ ἀνδρῶν Χαρραν καὶ αἰχμαλωτευθήσεται λαὸς Συρίας ἐπίκλητος λέγει κύριος 3 A message from the Lord: Thrice forfeit Damascus, and forfeit once again,[1] that rode rough-shod over the men of Galaad;[2] 4 fall fire on Azael’s court, to burn down all the strongholds of Benadad! 5 Broken Damascus gate shall be, nor any be left to dwell in Aven’s plain, or rule over Eden valley; far off, at Cir,[3] the Syrian folk shall go into banishment, the Lord says. 3
Hæc dicit Dominus:
Super tribus sceleribus Damasci,
et super quatuor non convertam eum,
eo quod trituraverint in plaustris ferreis Galaad.
4
Et mittam ignem in domum Azaël,
et devorabit domos Benadad.
5
Et conteram vectem Damasci:
et disperdam habitatorem de campo idoli,
et tenentem sceptrum de domo voluptatis:
et transferetur populus Syriæ Cyrenen,
dicit Dominus.
6 τάδε λέγει κύριος ἐπὶ ταῖς τρισὶν ἀσεβείαις Γάζης καὶ ἐπὶ ταῖς τέσσαρσιν οὐκ ἀποστραφήσομαι αὐτούς ἕνεκεν τοῦ αἰχμαλωτεῦσαι αὐτοὺς αἰχμαλωσίαν τοῦ Σαλωμων τοῦ συγκλεῖσαι εἰς τὴν Ιδουμαίαν 7 καὶ ἐξαποστελῶ πῦρ ἐπὶ τὰ τείχη Γάζης καὶ καταφάγεται θεμέλια αὐτῆς 8 καὶ ἐξολεθρεύσω κατοικοῦντας ἐξ Ἀζώτου καὶ ἐξαρθήσεται φυλὴ ἐξ Ἀσκαλῶνος καὶ ἐπάξω τὴν χεῖρά μου ἐπὶ Ακκαρων καὶ ἀπολοῦνται οἱ κατάλοιποι τῶν ἀλλοφύλων λέγει κύριος 6 This, too: Thrice forfeit Gaza, and forfeit once again, that secured for the men of Edom their full toll of captives;[4] 7 fall fire on Gaza’s walls, to burn down all its strongholds! 8 None shall dwell in Azotus, none rule over Ascalon; upon Accaron, too, my stroke shall fall; every trace of Philistia vanished and gone, the Lord God says. 6
Hæc dicit Dominus:
Super tribus sceleribus Gazæ,
et super quatuor non convertam eum,
eo quod transtulerint captivitatem perfectam,
ut concluderent eam in Idumæa.
7
Et mittam ignem in murum Gazæ,
et devorabit ædes ejus.
8
Et disperdam habitatorem de Azoto,
et tenentem sceptrum de Ascalone:
et convertam manum meam super Accaron,
et peribunt reliqui Philisthinorum,
dicit Dominus Deus.
9 τάδε λέγει κύριος ἐπὶ ταῖς τρισὶν ἀσεβείαις Τύρου καὶ ἐπὶ ταῖς τέσσαρσιν οὐκ ἀποστραφήσομαι αὐτήν ἀν{Q'} ὧν συνέκλεισαν αἰχμαλωσίαν τοῦ Σαλωμων εἰς τὴν Ιδουμαίαν καὶ οὐκ ἐμνήσθησαν διαθήκης ἀδελφῶν 10 καὶ ἐξαποστελῶ πῦρ ἐπὶ τὰ τείχη Τύρου καὶ καταφάγεται θεμέλια αὐτῆς 9 This too: Thrice forfeit Tyre, and forfeit once again, that gave Edom its full toll of captives, as though bond there were none between brethren; 10 fall fire on its walls, to burn down its strongholds! 9
Hæc dicit Dominus:
Super tribus sceleribus Tyri,
et super quatuor non convertam eum,
eo quod concluserint captivitatem perfectam in Idumæa,
et non sint recordati fœderis fratrum.
10
Et mittam ignem in murum Tyri,
et devorabit ædes ejus.
11 τάδε λέγει κύριος ἐπὶ ταῖς τρισὶν ἀσεβείαις τῆς Ιδουμαίας καὶ ἐπὶ ταῖς τέσσαρσιν οὐκ ἀποστραφήσομαι αὐτούς ἕνεκα τοῦ διῶξαι αὐτοὺς ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐλυμήνατο μήτραν ἐπὶ γῆς καὶ ἥρπασεν εἰς μαρτύριον φρίκην αὐτοῦ καὶ τὸ ὅρμημα αὐτοῦ ἐφύλαξεν εἰς νεῖκος 12 καὶ ἐξαποστελῶ πῦρ εἰς Θαιμαν καὶ καταφάγεται θεμέλια τειχέων αὐτῆς 11 This too: Thrice forfeit Edom, and forfeit once again, that would hunt down his own brother at the sword’s point; unnatural cruelty, so to hug his enmity, nor ever let rancour die down; 12 fire fall on Theman, to burn down the strongholds of Bosra! 11
Hæc dicit Dominus:
Super tribus sceleribus Edom,
et super quatuor non convertam eum,
eo quod persecutus sit in gladio fratrem suum,
et violaverit misericordiam ejus,
et tenuerit ultra furorem suum,
et indignationem suam servaverit usque in finem.
12
Mittam ignem in Theman,
et devorabit ædes Bosræ.
13 τάδε λέγει κύριος ἐπὶ ταῖς τρισὶν ἀσεβείαις υἱῶν Αμμων καὶ ἐπὶ ταῖς τέσσαρσιν οὐκ ἀποστραφήσομαι αὐτόν ἀν{Q'} ὧν ἀνέσχιζον τὰς ἐν γαστρὶ ἐχούσας τῶν Γαλααδιτῶν ὅπως ἐμπλατύνωσιν τὰ ὅρια αὐτῶν 14 καὶ ἀνάψω πῦρ ἐπὶ τὰ τείχη Ραββα καὶ καταφάγεται θεμέλια αὐτῆς μετὰ κραυγῆς ἐν ἡμέρᾳ πολέμου καὶ σεισθήσεται ἐν ἡμέρᾳ συντελείας αὐτῆς 15 καὶ πορεύσονται οἱ βασιλεῖς αὐτῆς ἐν αἰχμαλωσίᾳ οἱ ἱερεῖς αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες αὐτῶν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτό λέγει κύριος 13 This, too: Thrice forfeit Ammon, and forfeit once again, that so coveted Galaad’s lands, every mother’s womb he would rip open; 14 fire fall on Rabba’s walls, to burn down its strongholds! Hark to the bray of battle, blustering of the storm-wind! 15 Into exile Melchom[5] shall go, with all his retinue. 13
Hæc dicit Dominus:
Super tribus sceleribus filiorum Ammon,
et super quatuor non convertam eum,
eo quod dissecuerit prægnantes Galaad
ad dilatandum terminum suum.
14
Et succendam ignem in muro Rabba,
et devorabit ædes ejus in ululatu in die belli,
et in turbine in die commotionis.
15
Et ibit Melchom in captivitatem,
ipse et principes ejus simul,
dicit Dominus.
