Football is a Court & Field Sports Event that appears in the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The Event focuses on scoring points by simply kicking different types of ball into the goal.
Gameplay[edit]
In this event, the player has to attempt to make volley shots from the ten balls (five in the story mode medleys) thrown at them by the Shy Guy on the edge of the pitch. Each ball has a different point value if scored into the goal, with white ones being worth one point, blue ones being worth two, and rainbow colored ones being worth three. The player must use the circle pad to aim the ball into the goal past the Egg Pawn goalie, who will attempt to defend the ball, or can rotate the circle pad to perform a spin shot instead of a straight one. When the ball approaches the character, it will flash yellow, and the player must release the circle pad then to cause their character to perform the shot. If the player releases the circle pad before or after the flashing period, or fails to aim at all, their character will stumble and not perform the shot. As the event progresses, the player will have to make the shots from a number of different positions on the football pitch, and occasionally an extra Egg Pawn will appear in front of the goalie and move towards one side of the goal, blocking the player's shot, however this Egg Pawn will not try to defend but only serves as an obstruction. The types of balls scored and whether or not the shot scored are recorded at the bottom of the screen. The character with the most points from all ten shots wins the event.
Controls[edit]
1) Aim: Pull the Circle Pad down.
2) Shoot: Release the Circle Pad.
Curve shot: Spin the Circle pad in a circular motion.
Medley Match[edit]
In medleys, Football only appears as a bonus event, where the points earned in the event translate to the points the player gains in the medley. To accommodate for this, only five balls are thrown by the Shy Guy, and higher ranked players will receive fewer balls that are worth multiple points. Football appears as the fourth event in both the Court & Field Medley and the De-Stress Medley.
Story Mode[edit]
In the game's story mode, Football appears as part of both the first and third challenges in Wild Ones Episode 2, Corner the Koopa King!, in which Knuckles in the first and Vector in the third must beat Bowser in it along with Hammer Throw and Javelin Throw, and Weightlifting and Rings respectively. Football also appears in both challenges of Wild Ones Bonus 2, The Life of a Minion, in which Bowser must beat Knuckles in it with Hammer Throw, Javelin Throw, Boxing, and Wrestling - Freestyle, and Vector in it with Javelin Throw, Double Trap, Weightlifting, and Rings.
