Dream Table Tennis is a Dream Event that appears in the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. The objective of the event is to score the required amount of points before the opponent, with the event taking place in the Speed Rally Table Tennis Stadium. To unlock this event, the player must complete the Satellite Circuit.

Gameplay[edit]

In this event, the player plays two matches, one against a random opponent, and another against either the winner of the other match for a final match, or against the loser of the other match for a third place match. To win a match, the player must score the required amount of points before the opponent, and win more sets than them in a round with multiple sets. To serve the ball, the player must swing the Wii Remote upwards, and swing again when the ball is around level with the character's face to serve. If the player fails to make the serve, the opponent scores a point. The service changes every two serves. To return the ball, the player must swing the Wii Remote with the right timing. If the player swings too early, their shot will go to the left, though if they return it too late, the shot will go to the right. The player can perform both forehand and backhand shots, depending on which way they swing the remote and their character's position relative to the ball. As well as basic return shots, the player can perform chops by swinging the Wii Remote and pressing A Button, which returns a slower shot but is easier to perform. They can also perform faster smash shots by holding B Button while they swing, which are faster shots but require more precise timing to perform. Each time a shot is returned, the rally counter increases. When a character hits a ball past their opponent, they will win as many points as there currently are in the rally counter, and the rally will reset to 0. Over time, the player's Special Attack meter will fill up, which, when full, allows them to perform a Special Attack by holding A Button and B Button when they swing the Wii Remote. These shots are much harder to return, and each character's Special Attack has a different effect. The player can store up to three of these attacks at once. The player wins each set by scoring the amount of points required or higher before the opponent.

In this event, the player can select the match length to be 1, 3 or 5 sets, and the number of points to win each set to either 15, 30, 50, 80 or 100.

Controls[edit]

  • This event is played with the Wii Remote held vertically.
  • Points build up each time the ball is successfully returned. The first one to 50 points wins. Win a long rally with a special attack to score the most points.
  • This event only uses the Wii Remote. Raise the Wii Remote to toss the ball, and when it's at about face level, swing the Wii Remote to serve.
  • When the ball is returned to you, swing the Wii Remote to hit it back. It will go straight with perfect timing, left if hit sooner or right if hit later.
  • Swing up and down or press A Button to perform a chop. It's a defensive shot that can return high-speed balls, but at a slower speed.
  • Hold B Button to perform a smash. It's an offensive shot that can return the balls at thigh speeds, but the timing is difficult.
  • You can perform forehand and backhand shots depending on how you swing the Wii Remote. Take note of the character and ball's positions.
  • When your special move meter is full, press A Button and B Button while the ball is nearby to do a powerful Special Attack.
