- “The Cursed Key will sic the frightening Phanto on anyone who dares pick it up!”
- —Narrator, Super Mario Maker 2 – World Maker Update – Nintendo Switch
The Cursed Key is an item in Super Mario Maker 2 added in the April 22, 2020 update, only available in the Super Mario Bros. style. It is a Key in the artstyle of Super Mario Bros. 2 that glows pink and light blue. If Mario, Luigi, Toad, or Toadette pick it up, a Phanto appears and chases after them, damaging them if touched. It can even damage players who are not carrying the key. Although multiple Cursed Keys can be held at once, only one Phanto will spawn per player holding at least one key. Phanto will disappear once all Cursed Keys held by the players have been used on Key Doors.
