Department of Teacher Education
The roots of the University of Jyväskylä go back to 1863 and the first Finnish-language teacher training seminar. Our teacher education emphasises the values of active citizenship, social equality, inclusive education and an understanding of multiculturalism.
Comprehensive and research-based teacher education is one of the strengths of the University of Jyväskylä. Our research is multidisciplinary, applied and theoretical. Our research focuses on the processes of learning, teaching and guidance, on teaching and guidance, and on the future of schools and learning environments.
The Department of Teacher Education educates professionals for teaching and counselling from preschool to vocational institutions and adult education through
- a degree programme in primary school teacher education (M.A. (Ed) after the completion of B.A. (Ed))
- a Master's programme in school counselling
- Teachers’ pedagogical studies for subject teachers: basic studies and intermediate studies
- Qualification studies for school counsellors
The PhD programme in Education is one of the doctoral programmes of the Faculty of Education and Psychology. Students belong to one doctoral programme, but they may choose to participate in activities organised by multidisciplinary, nationally and/or internationally networked doctoral training networks and research communities.
Our goal is to produce and provide an effective environment for high quality research with international and national visibility and high scientific and societal relevance and impact. Active development of teacher education, its practices and curriculum has a long tradition both within the unit and the University Training School ("Normal School"), which collaborates closely with the Department of Teacher Education.
The Department of Teacher Education is involved as a partner in the development of several schools and education. Its research is characterised by a dialogue between theory and practice and longitudinal studies.
