Academic events

The University of Jyväskylä organises various academic events and celebrations every year. They are intended for the entire university community, alumni and invited guests. Some events are also open to the public. Welcome!

New professors' celebration lectures

The new professors introduce themselves to the academic and general public. They will brief you on a topic related to their research. In their presentations, they reflect on the significance and future of their field of science in relation to their own research. The professors give lectures in their native language.

The next celebration lectures will be held in 7.5.2025 & 10.12.2025.

University of Jyväskylä annual celebration

Sponsored by the Jyväskylä University Foundation, annual awards are granted to JYU staff members for their efforts in research, teaching, societal influence, and building community. 

In all award categories, proposals for the nominees come originally from the university community, and the award decisions are made by the Board of the Jyväskylä University Foundation upon the proposals from separate committees. 

The next University of Jyväskylä annual celebration will be held in 5.3.2025.

Conferment of Degrees Ceremony

In the Conferment of Degrees Ceremony, the new Masters and Doctors will be given their degree in the ceremonial act of conferment, and will receive a Master’s laurel and ring or a Doctor’s hat and sword as the sign of it. Distinguished persons will also be appointed as honorary doctors in the ceremony.

The previous Conferment of Degrees Ceremonies at the University of Jyväskylä were in 1969, 1984, 1990, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2009, 2013, 2016, 2019 and 2023. Faculties have also conferred Honorary Doctorates during other festivities.

The next Conferment of Degrees Ceremony will be held in 2026.

Opening of the Academic Year

The Opening of the Academic Year is a celebration for the whole JYU community to welcome new and continuing students as well as the entire staff to start the new academic year. 

The Opening of the Academic Year is part of the University’s academic traditions.  Its roots can be traced back to the days of Uno Cygnaeus, when the opening of the new Teacher Seminary, the first Finnish-language one in Finland, was celebrated on 14 August 1863. 

The next Opening of the Acedemic Year will be held in 2.-3.9.2025.

Researchers' Night

Researchers’ Night is an annual event, where researchers all over the Europe open their doors to every curious people. The all-day event celebrates achievements of science and research with multidisciplinary programme. Researchers present their job and studies via workshops, lectures, demonstrations and laboratory visits. 

The programme is designed to have something to do for the whole family, and during the day there are activities for school groups. We welcome people of all ages to explore the world of science. 

The next Researchers' Night will be held in September 2025.

The Science Forum

The Science Forum (Finnish: Tieteen päivät) is a biennial science festival. The festival presents the latest research to the curious public and discuss the possibilities as well as the limits of science more broadly. 

During the Science Forum, you can discover the secrets of reading motivation, dive into the mind of a teenager and reflect on the uncertain future of young people through the sustainability system together with the JYU research network. 

The next Jyväskylä Science Forum will be held on 8.-11.1.2025.
