The competition results for AI solutions in HSE graduation projects have been announced: with five graduates as the winners, and three being granted laureate titles.
The participants presented reports on the use of AI tools in their final qualification works. Experts evaluated the level and complexity of the tasks addressed, the appropriateness of the chosen tools for the set goal, the clarity and completeness of the presentation, the correctness of citations, and the ethical use of AI.
Contestants who demonstrated a high level of proficiency in using machine learning-based tools in their research became winners and laureates of the competition.
First place went to Ivan Karmanov, a graduate of the Business Administration programme, who used the generative AI YandexGPT Pro for segment analysis in his project. His research focused on the impact of different types of news on the stocks of companies in the Metals and Mining sector of the Moscow Exchange.
Maria Klimentyeva, a master's graduate in Applied Linguistics and Text Analytics, who also won first place, applied AI tools for the automatic generation of scientific article annotations. In her project, she analysed the capabilities of programs such as ChatPDF, ChatGPT, ChatSonic, and Copy.ai.
Second place was awarded to Artem Protasov, a graduate of the Media Communications programme, and Polina Sotnikova, a graduate of the Design programme.
Artem Protasov used AI tools for the generation of images, text, and animation to create production schemes for consistent AI animation.
Polina Sotnikova used AI to develop a music service capable of altering moods. With the help of ChatGPT, she automated the creation of personalised playlists that match the user's emotional state and relevant tasks.
Maria Yefremova, a graduate of the Design programme and a third-place winner, dedicated her project to developing a visual style and prototype for an application that would simplify and organise the process of game preparation. She used AI tools to generate high-quality images for her project.
The laureates of the competition were Ilya Gorbunov, a master's graduate in Business Informatics: Digital Enterprise and Information Systems Management, Ksenia Luzhnova, a master's graduate in Science of Learning and Assessment, and Anna Mun, a master's graduate in Science, Technology and Innovation Management and Policy.
Director for Internal Monitoring and Student Academic Development at HSE University
‘The ability to use artificial intelligence to achieve professional results has become a highly sought-after new skill both in the industry and academic circles. At the same time, AI practices are developing rapidly, and we do not always have time to catalogue them. In order to identify the practices used by students in their thesis work and to reward those who apply them most effectively and ethically, we have launched this competition. We are delighted that the competition generated student interest in its first year. It is also gratifying to see that among the winners are graduates from various campuses and programmes of HSE University.’
The winners will receive additional scholarships, and the top participants will be awarded certificates and gifts from HSE University.
