Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course focuses on the integration of sustainable development principles, a sustainability mindset, and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices within the business landscape. The course aims to equip students with the necessary attitude, knowledge and competencies to appreciate, analyze and manage sustainable practices in organizations through the lens of ethics, responsibility and sustainability. Emphasizing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), students will learn how these goals serve as a systemic framework for addressing complex sustainability challenges and opportunities in the modern world. A sustainability mindset fosters the ability to evaluate the long-term impacts of business decisions, driving innovation and promoting transformative change towards more responsible, resilient and regenerative practices. The course is designed in a very innovative way to enable students to develop a sustainability mindset by engaging them in reflective practices on their own lifestyle to enable changing habits, connecting to inspiring transformational life stories and cases of sustainability champions, and participating in the final group learning project on the ESG-dashboards to address wicked problems that Russian businesses across key industries face on their path towards becoming net zero and flourishing organizations living in harmony with soceity and nature. This course presents a structured approach to understanding the principles of sustainable development and corporate ESG practices. Through interactive lectures and hands-on seminars, students will be equipped to contribute positively to sustainability goals within their future organizations, actively engaging with the SDGs throughout their learning journey.

  • 1) Understand the fundamental concepts of sustainable development, the sustainability mindset, and ESG criteria, with a focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs);
  • 2) Analyze the role of information systems and technologies in promoting sustainability and cultivating a sustainability-oriented individual and collective mindsets within organizations;
  • 3) Evaluate real-world case studies of corporate ESG practices and their alignment with the SDGs in various industries;
  • 4) Develop strategies for implementing sustainable practices using managerial electronic dashboards, informed by ESG principles and the SDGs;
  • 5) Engage in thoughtful discussions on future trends in sustainable business practices and technology’s role in driving sustainable change, particularly regarding the achievement of the SDGs.
