NES Remix 2 is a arcade game released worldwide on April 25, 2014 for the Wii U. It is the sequel to NES Remix. NES Remix 2 consists of several timed challenges in Nintendo Entertainment System games, with Kid Icarus being one of them. Additionally, some challenges modify the game, introducing new elements like the camera zooming in or changing the colors displayed to the player.
NES Remix 2 was available to download from the Nintendo eShop until it was closed down on March 27, 2023.[2]
NES Remix Pack contains both NES Remix and NES Remix 2 on a single disc. Ultimate NES Remix is a Nintendo 3DS game which has select challenges from both NES Remix and NES Remix 2, including Kid Icarus challenges from NES Remix 2
Overview
NES Remix 2 has players complete challenges from NES games. Each challenge is a section from the game, which can have varying goals. The player may have to reach a goal or a specific distant area, or accomplish a specific other task. These can be collecting items or defeating enemies. To assist the player, certain visuals are seen over the gameplay or on the border of the game screen. Some earlier challenges can superimpose arrows or circles over the gameplay to guide the player, while every challenge where a number is tracked has that number displayed above the gameplay. Challenges are grouped into Stages, which may contain one or more challenges which are played in successive order. If the player fails a challenge, usually through dying in the game but possibly through failing to meet a condition of the challenge or running out of a timer for that challenge displayed on the right of the screen, they lose a life. The challenge is then reset. Different Stages have a different number of lives available, displayed on the right side of the screen. If the player loses all of their lives, they receive a Game Over and have the option to restart the Stage. They can instead choose to continue at the current challenge with a new set of lives.
Clearing a Stage bring the player to a results screen. The time it took to complete the Stage is tallied. The player earn one to three stars for that Stage based on how fast it was completed, with three stars having an additional ranking of "rainbow stars" for having a clear time that is even lower than the three star requirement. This timer is based If the player chose to continue when they ran out of lives, they only get one star regardless of the time. Additionally, the player earns Bits for various accomplishments, such as clearing a stage for the first time, getting "rainbow stars" for a stage, beating their best time, etc. These bits fill a meter, which rewards the player with a Stamp each time it fills. Stamps are black and white versions of sprites from the games, or a word balloon. Stamps could be used in Miiverse posts prior to the discontinuation of Miiverse. The player can watch a replay of the best time they achieved for each Stage.
Stars are used to unlock access to certain Stages. Having a certain number of Stars allows the player to unlock the Stages for each game, which proceed in a linear order. However the player starts with more than one Stage unlocked, and accessing the next Stage only requires beating an uncompleted Stage of that game. Generally, earlier Stages consist of simple challenges that are more of a tutorial, preparing the player for more difficult or complex challenges later on. Each day, one game is designated to have its Stages reward double the Bits compared to normal.
Two sets of Stages are different. These are REMIX I and REMIX II. Each of these Stages requires having Stars to unlock them, and the challenges for each stage may be for different games. In addition, the game is modified. This can mean the graphics are modified, the controls are modified, the rules are modified, or a new element is included. This can even involve changing the player character to that of a different game, with the player's abilities changed to match. The game's conclusion is at the end of REMIX II. Afterward, the player can unlock a BONUS set of Stages. While mostly similar to REMIX I and REMIX II, certain games only have challenges in the BONUS set, and are not modified.
NES Remix 2 includes two additional modes from the title screen: Super Luigi Bros. is a version of Super Mario Bros. but flipped horiztonally and with Luigi as the player character, while Championship Mode is a timed challenge using the games Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, and Dr. Mario. Championship Mode is only available if there is save data for NES Remix on the system.
