Proposal
Currently there isn't a tag for animal breeding facilities.
For consistency with the approved features amenity=animal_shelter and amenity=animal_boarding, I propose a new tag amenity=animal_breeding.
NOTE: This tag should be used to tag the whole facility area. If within this area you can distinguish buildings, lawns, courtyards, fences, you can tag them properly with building=yes, landuse=grass and so on. In case of cattle breedings, landuse=meadow or landuse=farmland should be used too, however they are probably outside the facility perimeter. Note that a cattle breeding normally is a farm, so it should be tagged accordingly: see below Breeding as secondary activity for details.
Tag | Description |
---|---|
amenity=animal_breeding | Mandatory. |
animal_breeding=<animal>[;<animal>...] | Optional, it lists the kinds of animals bred in the facility. For more info on how to set <animal>, see below Kinds of animals bred. |
name=* | Optional, it specifies the name of the facility. |
operator=* | Optional, it specifies the company, corporation, person or any other entity who is in charge the facility. |
Breeding as secondary activity
A structure of any tipe (e.g. a veterinary, an animal shelter, a farm, or anything else) can breed animals as secondary activity. In this case the facilty should be tagged with the main purpose (e.g. amenity=veterinary, amenity=animal_shelter, landuse=farmyard) and then add a secondary tag that is:
Tag | Description |
---|---|
animal_breeding=yes/no/<animal>[;<animal>...] | The structure breeds the listed animals; use yes only if you don't know which animals are accepted. For more info on how to set <animal>, see below Kinds of animals bred. |
Kinds of animals bred
To specify which kinds of animals are bred in the facility you have to insert them in the value field using the common English singular form (e.g. dog and not dogs, bird and not birds).
Multiple kinds of animals: you can set multiple values at the same time if the facility breeds more than one kind of animals, for example dogs and cats. In this case you have to separate values with semicolon ";".
<animal> | Description |
---|---|
dog | Breeding of dogs |
cat | Breeding of cats |
horse | Breeding of horses |
<user defined> | Accepts one or more kinds of animals you can specify. You should prefer commonly used values according to Taginfo |
Scientific name: If you want to specify the scientific animal's name you can add additional tags species=*, or genus=*, or taxon=*. This is optional, the main tag is as described above.
Examples
Tagging | Example |
---|---|
amenity=animal_breeding | A generic animal breeding, unknown kinds of animals bred |
amenity=animal_breeding animal_breeding=dog |

A breeding of horses |
amenity=animal_breeding animal_breeding=cat animal_boarding=cat |
A breeding of cats, that offers also boarding for owned cats |
amenity=animal_breeding animal_breeding=dog;cat;ferret;rabbit |
A breeding facility for dogs, cats, ferrets and rabbits |
landuse=farmyard animal_breeding=cow;horse |
A farm that, among other activities, breeds cows and horses |

- I oppose this proposal. I judge this is more properly a subset of a farm/ranch/agriculture tag. Identifying the breeding areas within a larger facility is fine. Many such facilities are mixed use (they raise cattle for food and breed a few to sustain the herd). The tag as proposed seems to have a more urban focus, say for a particular building acting as a cat breeding facility. Brycenesbitt (talk) 18:18, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

- I approve this proposal. This is exactly what I am looking for to be more specific on tagging some farmland/meadow. --MADetter (talk) 03:49, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

I oppose this proposal. Use the proper tags Key:genus, Key:species and Key:taxon and write about the right thing as "dog/cat/horse/cow" are all genara and no species.--Skyper 14:07, 16 June 2013 (UTC)
- Removed any reference to the word species. Here we use only the common English name for any kind of animals bred. If you want to specify the scientific animal's name you can add additional tags species=* or genus=* or taxon=*. But this is beyond this proposal. --Viking81 (talk) 22:02, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
