Non-native Czech from the Theoretical and Computational Perspective

Funded by the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic
project ID 16-10185S
2016-2018

Goal

Research of Czech as a non-native language is justified for a number of theoretical and practical reasons. Most of them are due to the fact that there is very little systematic investigation of non-native Czech in comparison both with native Czech and with other non-native languages, such as English or German. As a result, the field suffers from weak methodological foundations – non-native Czech as an evolving system
of developmental stages has not found its way into the linguistic theory and practice. This project aims to develop

  1. a theoretical description and analysis of morphology and morphosyntax of non-native Czech, including a multidimensional taxonomy of word forms,
  2. corresponding computational models of non-native Czech, combining rule-based and probabilistic methods,
  3. a pilot corpus of learner texts, annotated with categories of the taxonomy.

The results will help to understand the process of learning an inflectional language and to build tools and resources focused on non-native Czech, including contemporary teaching methodologies and materials.
