Bumblebee goes head-to-head with... Bumblebee?

In the aftermath of a breakout from KSI Laboratories, a power plant comes under attack. The culprit? Bumblebee! As witnesses to the event are interviewed on television, the real Bumblebee sets out to find who's been impersonating him.

Trailing the mysterious robot out of town, Bumblebee hears from Optimus Prime, who warns him not to engage the impersonator alone. Suddenly, however, the Autobot scout encounters a burning house, and a woman is trapped on the upper floor! Bumblebee races to the rescue, but the woman refuses to climb onto his hand, having seen the news reports on the power station attack. Before Bumblebee can convince her otherwise, the Autobot is tackled by his impostor, who introduces himself as Stinger. The artificial Transformer welds Bumblebee's battle mask into place, rendering the two indistinguishable, and a fight ensues. Stinger knocks the Autobot to the ground, but he retaliates with missiles and a tree trunk to his opponent's face.

Optimus Prime arrives on the scene, and finds the two identical warriors. Nevertheless, the Autobot leader trusts that his scout will give him a sign, and just at that moment, the trapped woman falls from the window. The real Bumblebee dives to catch her, and Stinger is revealed to Optimus. The villainous Transformer pulls a gun on the Autobot leader, but Prime knocks it from his hand, and sends Stinger running with a declaration that true warriors are born, not made in a lab. After receiving thanks from the woman, the two Autobots roll away, pondering both Stinger's motives and allegiance.

Quotes

Notes

  • An upcoming news item is "are modern toys too complicated for kids to play with?" This is, of course, a tip of the hat to the Age of Extinction line's increased focus on simpler, child-friendly toys, something which attracted notable fan ire.

Errors

  • Although the story occurs before Age of Extinction, Optimus Prime and Bumblebee sport the new bodies they acquire part-way through that film. Considering the story hinges on Bumblebee and Stinger being palette swaps of each other, this can't even be chalked up to artistic license.
  • Stinger welding Bumblebee's mask down to make them indistinguishable doesn't make a whole lot of sense considering the story's first page shows us Stinger is still identical to the Autobot with the mask retracted. It seems likely that the script intended for Stinger to keep his mask down for the entire story, just as in the Age of Extinction film.
  • Stinger is very talkative compared to his mute depiction in the Age of Extinction film. Notably, the KSI Transformers were never designed with or intended to have the function of speech, as shown by Joyce's frustration and shock at Galvatron suddenly speaking during the film and this would be set far before Galvatron asserts his control over the drones at that.
  • Additionally, it seems a bit remiss for Bumblebee not to recognise the homicidal robot who tried to kill him when the Autobots raid KSI during the events of the film.

Notes

Errors

  • One competition question asks which country is the location for Age of Extinction's climactic battle. The possible choices are Spain, Japan, and Australia...

Trivia

  • The unique way in which KSI's Transformers change modes is named "hypno-transformation," which was a term used to refer to the process in-house at ILM which didn't cross over into much ancillary media.[1]
