Merchandise

The wrist-communicators are based off Takara's line of transforming watches, originally sold in Japan in 1986. The line consisted of Ultra Magnus, Superion and Galvatron (all of which were featured in the comic, even when it didn't make sense). These watches were later distributed in the United States in 1993, directly by Takara, as part of the Generation 2 franchise.
