The Primal Vanguard is a Transformer organization concerned with off-Cybertron peacekeeping, dating back to Nova Prime's day. The races it peacekept tended to be organics, who tended to get squished (literally) very soon into a fight. Its members have built-in weapons as part of their anatomy.

Tailgate claimed to be part of a bomb disposal unit with the Primal Vanguard, though this later turned out to be a lie. Hangers On One of his claims was that the Vanguard used surprise attacks a lot: using a transmat pad to appear and stomp the enemy. He might have made it all up though. Before & After

The Vanguard had its best days under the command of the legendary Delta Magnus. During the Interregnum, after Nova Prime went missing, the Guardians looked after the Matrix of Leadership until a new Prime could be found. An Intimate Beheading The Primal Vanguard became a source of Cybertron's reintroduction to gender as several members chose to identify as "she" after encountering sexually dimorphic organic races. An Axe to Break the Ice

In their better days, the Dynobots had been members of the Primal Vanguard. Rage Officially known as the Vanguard Covert Strike Force, they were model soldiers with a spotless record until a mission gone wrong left their medic Skar dead and forced the rest of them to adopt monstrous new altmodes. When their superiors callously placed the Dynobots in quarantine to study how they acquired these new modes, the team was outraged and deserted from the Primal Vanguard. Underworld

By the time of the Clampdown, the Vanguard had gone downhill. The organisation was mired in the "Phobos Controversy" and at one point an ex-Vanguard member was responsible for a shooting in Apophenia. Post Hoc Ironfist, however, continued to study and fangasm about the Delta Magnus days, filling his workspace with Vanguard artifacts and writing monographs about them. An Intimate Beheading

The Functionist Universe

In an alternate reality, a long period of conflict existed between Cybertron and the rest of space and the Primal Vanguard was off-world for two million years. Eventually the Council claimed to have sold Luna 2 to the Black Box Consortia as part of a peace deal. The half a million Guardians out of work had their optics replaced with cameras on their way home: now they could serve a new function as unwitting spies. The Custom-Made Now Megatron suspected that Orion Pax had been conscripted into the Vanguard and had been promoted to a high rank. However, since Orion was nowhere to be found on Cybertron circa 2016, Megatron assumed he was either dead or his ship had been waylaid. Modes of Production
