The Klingon Empire is an interstellar nation ruled by the warlike Klingons from their homeworld of Kronos, using starships such as warbirds in skirmishes against the neighboring Federation.

In the 23rd century, a Klingon force led by Kuri attempted to attack a Federation dilithium mining colony on Cygnus Seven which bordered Klingon space, believing that the Federation had violated the Empire's claim on the planet. Prime's Directive, Part One When taunting Spock, Kuri believed that his foe's surrender had proven that the Federation stood no chance against the Klingon Empire. Prime's Directive, Part Three When Fortress Maximus entered the battlefield, Starscream opted for the better part of valor, stealing away a cache of dilithium and making his way to Kronos to conquer the Klingon Empire. After Kuri's force had been defeated, the Autobots and Starfleet pondered crossing the Neutral Zone to catch up to the Decepticons, aware that such an act risked open war. Prime's Directive, Part Four The Klingon High Council concurrently met to discuss the vessels crossing the Neutral Zone and the coming war before the Decepticon arrived, intending to supplant the Klingon Empire with a new Decepticon Empire. Soon enough, the Autobots and Starfleet arrived to liberate the planet, working with the Klingons to defeat the invaders. Subsequently, James T. Kirk negotiated a peace with the Empire, allowing the Autobots and Starfleet to leave, but at the cost of the Decepticons remaining in Klingon custody. Prime's Directive, Part Five
