Mmmm, strawberry...

Energon stars, sometimes called energon chips, or energon cells, are produced by the Omnicons and Terrorcons. They are useful for the storage of mined energon in a compact, more stable form, and can also be attached directly to Transformers' bodies and used as short-lived power booster cells. In addition, the Transformer to which the Star is attached can pull an Energon weapon out of the Star if they so wish (this aspect of the Stars is usually only seen among the Autobots).

Energon stars are vaguely round, flattened bodies with protrusions that form a rough star-shape. They are transparent red or green, because it looks like delicious candy. Those produced by the Terrorcons are green, but the Omnicons' products are red, because the good guys get the yummy red ones. Energon stars produced by using Super Energon are transparent blue and are used by the combiners: Superion Maximus, Constructicon Maximus, and Bruticus Maximus.

Energon stars could be created from either Omnicons or Terrorcons through their processing of Energon ore. Not only could they be used to create weapons, but they could also be used to form Space Bridge-esque portals Megatron Raid, and, further, could be used to regenerate individuals who made use of them (or, if the damage was too severe, at least stabilize the user until help arrived). Open Fire! Autobot-style stars could also prevent damage from energon towers, while Decepticon-type stars could not, seemingly due to the fact that the structures utilized the same material that Omnicons used in the construction of their cells.

Terrorcons instinctually sought out Energon and could not only generate stars themselves, but feed on them as well. Two Blackouts were damaged in a fight against two Skyblasts, and, to recover, they fed on two stars given to them by Kicker. Energon Grid Terrorcons also seemed to have a different process of creating the cells themselves. After eating raw Energon ore, a Terrorcon would then have a star appear on its back, but if this star was touched before settling it could seriously harm whoever came into contact with it. Scorpinok

Energon chips were apparently used as a type of currency amongst Transformers. The bounty hunter Lockdown was paid in them. Lockdown's Battle Bio

Oooh, candy! And money! Candy money!!

Energon stars were used as a form of currency for Cybertronians, alongside Cyber Planet Keys and coins. Cannonball paid Flamewar a substantial sum with these items in order to have her join his Star Seekers on an energy raid. Hoist the Flag

Energon stars get plugged into the Transformer's spark crystal. Unlike Mini-Cons or Cyber Keys, they don't activate any gimmicks, they simply look pretty.
