The global crystal is a vital component of a particular computer that regulates molecular motion, and is essential for keeping Transformers adapted to the different conditions on Earth. Without the computer being in correct working order, the Transformers depending on it will slowly perish.

Both the Autobots and Decepticons had their own computers containing global crystals. Bumblebee managed to steal the crystal from the Decepticons' computer, after he discovered that the Decepticons had kidnapped a number of humans for use as slave labor. As the Decepticons didn't have a spare, Megatron was so desperate to get the crystal back that he agreed to release all of the slaves immediately, even wiping the memories of the enslavement from the humans' minds. True to their word, the Autobots returned the global crystal. Bumblebee to the Rescue
