The TurboGrafx-16 is NEC Home Electronics' debut into home video games in collaboration with Hudson Soft. Originally launched in Japan as the PC Engine to compete with the Famicom, the system would become a huge success outperforming Sega's Mega Drive in Japan. Unfortunately, it couldn't replicate this same success in other regions, with the TurboGrafx-16 in North America being well behind the Genesis and SNES in sales. As a result, NEC decided not to release the system in Europe which was planned to be released as simply the TurboGrafx.
