Maria Pia de Bragança e Saxe-Coburgo-Gotha was born in 1907 at Lisbon, PortugalG. She is the daughter of Carlos I de Bragança e Saxe-Coburgo-Gotha, Rei de Portugal and Marie Amalia Laredo e Murca. She married, firstly, Francesco Javier Bilbao Batista in 1925. She married, secondly, Giuseppe Manlio Blais in 1939. She married, thirdly, Antonio da Costa Amado-Noivo in 1985.
From 1925, her married name became Bilbao Batista. From 1939, her married name became Blais. Her married name became da Costa Amado-Noivo.
Her claim to be daughter of Carlos I is supposedly supported by a baptism registered at the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel and Saint Aloysius. She claimed that her baptismal registration recorded that her father was "D. Carlos de Sassonia-Coburgo y Savoya de la Casa de Braganza de Portugal" (King Carlos I of Portugal). However the original baptismal registers of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel and Saint Aloysius were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. In 1939 the Vicar-General of the Diocese of Madrid-Alcalas issued a baptismal certificate to Maria Pia with information provided to him at that time by Don Antonio Goicoechea y Cusculluela, a member of the Spanish parliament and the Governor of the Bank of Portugal, who had reportedly been present at the baptism. Subsequently Maria Pia used this baptismal certificate as evidence for her claim to be the recognised daughter of King Carlos. Not surprising, her parentage claim continues to be a source of some debate today.1
